FS7: Sony Fs7 incapable of seamless playback?

When playing back footage shot on my Fs7 the playback freezes momentarily at the end of each clip. This is an issue when I am "feeding" b-roll to a news channel via fiber optic and they would prefer that the footage be usable as received, without having to edit out the pauses at the end of each clip. As far as I can tell there is no means by which the Fs7 can play back the media seamlessly with only cuts between the clips, without the brief pause at the end of each clip.

An F55 owner I spoke to says that the F55 can playback media out of the camera without any pause between clips. He did not perform a test and was only going by memory. It could be that he is mistaken, that he never noticed the freeze frame at the end of each clip during playback. It is brief and could easily go unnoticed. But it is enough to foil immediate turnaround of the acquired footage and necessitate editing to remove the pauses between clips.

Do me a favor, if you would- fire up your Fs7, insert an XQD card containing some footage that you have shot, and see if the playback freezes the image momentarily at the end of each clip. To be honest I cannot recall if my Fs7 has always done this when playing back video or if I have activated something that is causing this. I performed a full reset and no change- the playback still briefly freezes at the end of each clip. I tried several different XQD cards, I tried playback of video recorded in different codecs, but no change. It still pauses and does not playback seamlessly with only a cut between the clips. The video was all in 59.94i. I did not perform a test of playback of frame rates other than 59.94i.

If it is in fact the case that the Fs7 cannot playback media without the freeze frame between clips, it could be a deal-breaker for certain types of jobs. It seems odd to me that the F55 would not do this but the Fs7 does. An online search yielded nothing regarding this issue. Surely I cannot be the first to have this be an issue.

Wait, the news channel requires that you edit in camera while shooting? I thought it was a Super 8 technique.

An interesting feature of my old PDW-F800 was that you could non-destructively edit, trim, and rearrange clips onboard the camera for playback. Never used it.

Thank you! So I am not crazy after all.

Any F5 or F55 owners reading this who can test it on their cameras? Likely that the Fs5 also does it since the Fs5 is Fs7-based.

Just pulled out my F55. It was on a rental this past weekend and there were 4K(DCI) clips on the cards(I own 64GB & 128GB XQD/SxS adapters). Popped in one of the cards and the clips play back seamlessly.

Don't have to pull my camera out- playback is not seamless. It's not designed to be, just a way to review clips.

Is it not also true that the playback on the F5 and F55 is intended to be "just a way to review clips"? Curious that it is seamless on the F5 and F55 but not on the Fs7. Why design it to be seamless on some cameras but not on other models in the same family of cameras?

How difficult would it be to have it also be seamless on the Fs7? Is this differentiation one of the ways that Sony was able to keep the cost down for the Fs7 and make it less expensive than the F5? I wonder if it was even a result of a decision or just a happenstance. There is nothing physical involved. No mechanics. It's purely code, right?

The Fs7 isn't well suited for news shooting / ENG. I get that. And my need for seamless playback is a niche need.

Have you tried asking your clients to not be whiney little bitches?

JPNola,

Out of curiosity why does this client want a camera that plays back clips seamlessly? What's their workflow?

Thanks!

JP - I get your frustration.... it is a niche thing and a bit of an odd request but for those of us who have worked under the tight deadline of tv news - especially live coverage type scenarios - I understand the need to feed back a "clean" minute or two of b-roll.
I have to wonder why it couldn't be an easy firmware fix... though good luck getting someone to respond to that request.

Sports News, Bern. Quick turnaround. They do edit what they receive prior to airing it. But I imagine it is preferable when the footage is received in a manner that doesn't force edits. If they like a sequence as it was shot they can just leave be, as received. The manner in which the Fs7 delivers negates that option and forces an edit.

The problem isn't so much the Fs7 and more that I am using the Fs7 for a type of production for which it was never intended.

... Can't resist adding my own personal gripe re: FS7 playback/review.

Why in God's name do I have to wait for an extremely slow thumbnail creation EVERY time I enter playback mode? Is this the same on the other Sony 'cinema' cameras?

I could understand waiting once to cache 'new' clips, but SURELY these thumbnails could be saved to the card once they've been created, no?

Yep I didnt want to divert the thread.. but waiting for that thumbnail creation and many other things make the camera feel like it runs on a 1987 processor designed by an intern.

Had the gopro app in the car the other day (the camera was stuck on the rear) and navigating to record the image upside down was instant. It feels like two worlds sometimes.

My biggest current suck is that when disengaging S+Q the camera forgets that it was in cache record.

TO divert the thread even more.. when the new panny comes out I wonder how many 'top' 'professional' 'expert' reviewers will touch on this stuff.
