FS7: Sony FS7 Demo Camera Just Arrived At Texas Media Systems

...The question is, how to find out without incurring a restocking fee if it turns out no good?
.

Working with a Value Added Reseller may open the door to demo / testing before you buy... We try to do this for clients if needed when and where we can.

I'm way out in the sticks, so no dealers or rental outfits within reasonable driving distance.. I may have to be patient until I find an owner who's willing to do the test (simple public domain software program and loopback cable) and confirm.. Other option is to rent for ~$400 for four days and run it through its paces, but that's $400 less I'll have to spend on a camera.

I was reading the owner's manual for the FS7 and got another question.. it suggests that the HDMI port outputs 4K ONLY when the camera is in RAW recording mode. So what I am unclear about is whether an Atomos Shogun will be able to record a 4K signal without adding thousands of dollars of add ons to enable RAW recording.

Can the HDMI port output 4K on a base model FS7?

No. FS7 outputs 4K over HDMI in compressed modes. I just finished shooting a piece with internal cards set to UHD 23.98 and HDMI set to 4K. I was shooting CineEI, SLog3. Think Odyssey, not Shogun.

I wasn't clear enough in my question. I know that HDMI is not RAW, but I just want to know if it is blanked out when shooting without the RAW recorder. I want to record 10-bit DNxHR on the Shogun off this port, but I don't want to buy $7,000 of options to make that port active. Is it possible to select RAW mode which turns on the 4K to HDMI without the RAW recorder?

I don't think you "select RAW mode which turns on the 4K to HDMI without the RAW recorder".

But like Ned said - if you set internal XAVC card recording to 4k, you should get 4k out on the HDMI port - without the word RAW ever coming into the equation, and without the XDCA back or a RAW recorder attached.

Many times we help people in the "boonies" to get equipment for test purposes. That is our VAR approach. We recognize the limits you have and try to work with you. It's not always possible but if we can make a demo set up work we do. Currently we are in NAB prep mode so demos are limited at present time.

On page 100, where it talks about output formats and limitations, it shows 'video format 3840x2160' and the HDMI column is showing '1920x1080i'. When the raw output has a number, like 3840x2160, the HDMI column has a matching QHD resolution. It's confusing, because it suggests that if you're shooting 4K to the internal cards, the HDMI out is 1080i.
