FS5: Sony FS5 - Sony SELP18105G problem

I have the FS5 with kit lens pre-ordered. I am coming from an ex1 and have no 'lens bank' im sitting on which gives me lens options. What is the alternative to the kit lens at the same price? (I'm already pushing it for the camera and mac pro upgrade - to add another £1000 to the cost for a good zoom lens is just impossible).

Only you can decide on your priorities but you are at least forewarned about the 18105 and won't get caught out.

The 18-100 range has given me a lot of head scratching and have only just become satisfied with a Nikkor 2470 f2.8 plus speedbooster but it's not an ideal solution for all shooting conditions or budgets.

It’s very difficult to design a good, inexpensive lens for this sensor size. The Sony 18-105 is intentionally designed as a compromise lens. My belief is that it’s a pretty good match to the FS5. With organic subject matter (the opposite of a brick wall background) and lens correction turned off, you probably won’t notice the distortion unless you’re really looking for it. And it does have the advantage that it connects to all of the automatic features of the FS5. The caveats are:
-Lens correction doesn’t work on 4K. Edit: I'm told it does work.
-If you plan to do a slow zoom creep, you had better turn off auto correction and make sure your background doesn’t have strong horizontal or vertical lines.

Many people use Canon or Sigma Art lenses with a Metabones adapter. All of this is discussed in great detail in the FS100, FS700 and FS7 sections.

Hey Nirv, you really hate the 18105G don't you

I don't have any real expectations with a £500 lens but If I had to change it I'd go for the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the Sigma 24-105 f4 in Alpha mount. The 24-105 is a full frame lens so you could use a speed booster too.

On the FS5, the lens correction DOES work in 4k. It's in the 90 minute video
with Alistair Chapman.....someone asks this exact question.

What's to like?

Price, build quality, zoom range, power zoom function and I find the images in 1080p are more than acceptable and give a nice soft look, so no need to use a softening filter. Hey it's not perfect, it's way too slow and it won't work in 4K or RAW on the majority of cameras but it's usable on my A6000 and FS700R. I have read a lot of the future lenses will work this way, have firmware in the cameras that will fix all the imperfections.

I just find it amusing how much you hate it, I feel the same way about Canon cameras. Nothing wrong with being passionate.

My favorite FE zoom is the 16-35 F4 OSS because:
1) Minimal lens breathing
2) Focus barrel barely extends while focusing or zooming (great for stealth, steadicam and minimizing dust being pumped to the sensor)
3) Great minimal focus distance (almost like a top notch prime)
4) Has OSS built-in
5) Decent weight @ 518g (not the lightest but at least it is under 600g).

And with the FS5 you can use up to 2x ClearImage Zoom to get more reach so that 35*1.5 = 70*1.5 at the farther end on the FS5.

If you are on a super low budget, then go with the FE 28-70 F3.5-5.6 OSS lens. That one has more barrel extension when zooming but has a decent minimal focus distance, super light weight at 295g and you can fix the aperture to F5.6 when zooming (only 1-stop worse than the FE 16-35 F4).

BOTH have dust and moisture resistant construction..

There's been a firmware update out for quite some time that gives the FS700 support for the 18-105.
however it doesn't work if you record the raw signal...

Lens correction doesn't work with HFR either on the FS7 and assume also on the FS5?

Strange thing about this lens, I was told by Sony, the lens correction
wouldnt work at HFR, but it does with internal recording with the FS700....just
goes to show you shouldn't always listen to what the manufacturers say, but
test things for yourself.

Sony also said the FS700 would not receive a firmware upgrade to correct
for the distortion. But it did.
