Sony FS100 Review and Reel

Hi, everyone – I know this isn't very timely but I wrote a review about my experiences with the FS100 after 4 months of use that can be read here.

Now that I'm no longer regretting not waiting for a hypothetical sub $8,000 5D that is moire-less and has XLR inputs, I could write it with peace of mind. Included in the post is an all-FS100 reel which can also be reviewed below.

For anyone in the market for an FS100, I hope this is helpful!

Thanks,
Kyle

Thanks, everyone! For this reel I used...

Canon FD 50mm 1.4 SSC (70% of shots)

Sony 18-200 kit lens (20% of shots)

Canon FD 50 mm 3.5 macro (10% of shots)

kyle-

the more fs100 footage i see, the more i like a fast 50mm.

and you used the 50mm very well on your reel.

thanks for sharing.

i also appreciate the work you've done for smile squared.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Rob. I definitely like the versatility of the 50mm. You don't have to get too close for portraits. I'm thinking of getting a 28mm for a general handheld setup.

Does anyone have any experience with a 28mm FD?

Yep, that would be in my kit along side my 50mm f1.4 and 70-210mm f4, I have the f2.8 and I read a lot of stuff before hand about it being a bit soft, and I couldn't find a cheap f2.0 so I bought it anyway, it is soft, but it doesn't put me off using it, it comes in very hand for wide(r) stuff and I do tend to use it quite a lot, it is usually stopped down to 4-5.6, so I still get a reasonably sharp image, especially with the FS100.

I've got a Vivitar 28mm F2.5 FD mount lens that works on my FS100. Honestly, I have a hard time shooting things with a
prime, I am just used to zooms. About the only time I use primes is for interviews. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I will be
in a place and see three or four shots, and with a zoom, I can have them in about 10 seconds flat. With a prime, I am
running all over trying to get them just right. However, for interviews, you don't usually change framing that much (although
I do like to do it sometimes, go from a MCU to a XCU or something) so I like the faster primes for interviews sometimes.
That being said, I have a few random things I've shot with the 28mm, if you'd like to see what it look like, I could post
something. Not sure if there are faster 28mm FD mount lenses, but I found this one on ebay in REALLY good
shape, and for a great price, so I couldn't resist. I like the focus on it, just right, not too stiff, manual iris ring,
and it's nice and small for times when you want to look 'touristy'. I just have to totally relearn shooting, I have been
shooting with traditional shoulder mounts and other camcorders so long I have just have a hard time going out and shooting
something that I can actually put together with primes.....I'll get a few good shots, but don't get the 'sequences' if that
makes any sense. Probably the best thing to do, is to FORCE myself to go out and shoot a 'story' using just a prime. If only
I had the time....
