Sony FS100 Color grading with Cineform conversion and First light

Did you apply a curve or just raised the contrast?

When applying an s-curve you can raise the contrast in the mids but keep highlights and the low end. That´s essentially the look of film. Contrasty but keeping the "ends" normal.

Looking at the histogram you can see, there is still room for more contrast without crushing or clipping

I always keep the highlights a litte darker. I feel, when watching a movie, the brightest parts are not as bright as typical for video, but look silky

Thanks.. The problem I was having is trying to get that music video color and still keep the detail in the hair. My first images were done and I can see the detail. But I wanted the look more like the video here.. Once I get the color I like, the detail in the hair is gone.. I guess it is not horible. but I hate to lose detail like that.
 
Hmmm, I don´t completely get it. When you raise the contrast you automatically raise saturation.
You should wrestle around a little with the 3-way color correction and saturation.

I don´t understand your connection of color and contrast. That can be dealt with seperatly.
 
Sorry I don't know the correct terminology. I guess to explain it with the S curve. Then I make the S more bold. It gets the look I want. When I make the S less pronounced it loses the punch from the bilder S profile.

Does that make more sense?

What do you exactly mean by "rich texture" and "punch" regarding color?

Essentially when you make the curve more bold the only side effect is the increase of saturation. The sharper the contrast the more saturation.
There is really no magic in it which makes the colors different in a special way.
Just apply a more gentle curve, so you don´t crush anything and then raise saturation a bit.

Ok, I tried to find out what you could mean.

This is a screencap example of to much contrast. Blacks are gone.

Then I lowered the contrast. Now you can see some texture in the blacks but saturation was also lowered. Therefore I raised saturation by ~10%

Saturation of the two pictures is about the same, but of course, due to the higher contrast the colors look not exactly the same because they are in a different luma range.

Maybe that´s what you mean. Contrasty colors. If you want this you will have to crush the dark parts of the image, as far as I know.

That depends on are you doing an RGB curve or a Luma curve? When doing an RGB curve, the colors are also boosted, when doing a luma curve, only the luma component is boosted.
