Sony Electronics' Professional Solutions of America (a division of Sony Electronics Inc.) advises me through email the F's are now shipping.

I heard they might be moving this week on Friday.

Any more details? I have an out of town job I fly out for a week from today, if I can convince my dealer to get me mine it will save a ton of money and heartache for me not having to rent.

Shipping a new cinema camera on time? Crazy..... I better go turn up the heat in the machine shop ;-)

Yeah, now to convince somebody to give me mine :-) I sure could use it, travel job next week and I would rather not rent.

Just passin' through.

So tiny. The R-5 is even on there. And check out the sexy OLED EVF.

Aaargh Mitch, you make choosing really difficult (or crystal clear) that Oled sure looks great from the outside.
btw over here in europe it will be march before we get anything.
That container ship could go a little faster.
Is that a new EVF cable I see there?

I wonder if that OLED is any more susceptible to burn when exposed to the sun. A friend just nuked his Alphatron by letting the sun into the eyepiece for a just couple of seconds.

It will burn just like every other VF out there. Magnifying Glass + sun + screen = Burn

I never had that problem in 25 years with mirrored ENG VF's. I think it's the direct-view design of these newer viewfinders that are causing the problem.
It has nothing to do with direct view. Any LCD VF mirrored or direct is susceptible to burning. Only the older style B&W tube viewfinders are not susceptible, and generally indestructible.

Well there's some reason for it. I burned my alphatron after about a week. I've been shooting for 25 years and never done that before.

Same thing happened to me with my Alphatron, literally 2 seconds of the first day of ownership., and there was a burn in. And I was incredibly careful, always put my hand over it..

Like everyone else, never had any burn ins on any other of my cameras whatsoever.

The older B&W didn't burn right away because it's a CRT monitor (glass). But, I have had one burn and melt the plastic on the corner next to the B&W VF monitor, with just the loop and mirror. Just pull the loop off of your Alphatron and put it in your hand in full sun, then you will see why. It focuses to a pin point, right on your screen. Optics 101.

Retro CRT based EVFs are going to be the new fashion next year.
I have a working design for an LCD, OLED, LCOS protection, but it would add $1000 to the cost of the EVF. Old CRT EVFs were $10k and lasted forever. The new ones are $500-$3500 but are VERY susceptible to solar burn. Maybe my idea is financially sound.

The protection on the older Sony C30W viewfinder has brillant solution: there's a rubber iris that opens when you push on it with your face. Move away, it closes. Works great!
