Sony FS 700 - SLOG 2

Hi there,

I just got the Sony FS 700 as a replacement for my FS 100. I plan to get the
odyssey 7Q though at the moment I don't have it, so I have to consider
working with PP's:

Is the S-LOG 2 the best PP for Latitude/Grading in Post etc. or is it only
meant to be shot with in RAW? I ask this, because to me it seems that
a 8-bit codec doesn't offer that many possibilieties in grading.

What are your experience with S-LOG 2?
Are there other PP's which you could recommend?

Thanks for the advises.

Cheers

S-Log 2 really requires a 10-bit codec. I've shot quite a bit with AVCHD and 7Q S-Log and it doesn't compare. With 8-bit you really struggle to bring it back to "normal" levels. With the 7Q you can really push it.

Thanks for the answer!

Any flat bust still gradable Picture Profiles/ Cinegammas you can recommend
for the AVCHD Codec then?

I got a 7Q recently and am getting close to finishing my first project with it and definitely, Gene is right, there is an amazing amount more you can push it and not just with RAW, the PRORES is standing up amazing in the grades.

I personally do some pretty saturated grades...I just like a lot of color most of the time. My clients seem to prefer it over flatter looks...which I like both, but am personally always finding myself wanting saturation the end. Starting to feel like a minority on that among other shooters so maybe I will come around soon. LOL. That being said, I had the upgrade done to my FS700 for 3 months before I actually got the 7Q. I started experimenting on every project after with bouncing between SLOG2 and DOUG JENSENS recommended Picture profile for the FS700. I also dabbled a bit with a flatter picture profile made by Noah von Yougal...I'm sorry if I am not spelling that right, he is member on here. Below is a video using all 3 different picture profiles throughout. There is no doubt the most dynamic range was found in the SLOG2 footage. After I made this video I still couldn't decide what I like the most though!!LOL. But by and by, over the course of several projects, I found myself using SLOG2 more and more and eventually completed my last AVCHD project before I got the 7Q all using SLOG2 and was very happy with the results. I had the most success with skin tones with it, but I still found I could get some extreme looks out of it as well. I will say though, I found I had to approach the grade for SLOG2 footage quiet different than how I approached other picture profiles. The 7Q is really worth it, but even without, I found myself favoring SLOG2 towards the end even with the AVCHD after I got better at understanding how to get what I wanted out of it.

This video is about 30% SLOG2, 20% Noah's flat PP, and 50% Doug Jensen's recommended settings. I honestly liked all 3 options. My last project which was entirely SLOG2 is not available online yet until my clients new website is up. But this is better example to see a few different picture profile in action for being pushed hard in AVCHD.

Used with great care and understanding, S-Log2 with AVCHD can be a useful tool. But I would definitely say that this is something that takes time for you to experiment with to get a proper hang of and be comfortable enough to walk into a paid job with. You may want to first try using ITC709(800%), which is REC709 with the highlights opened up three stops.

Thanks for the advices.

@Mitch any particular PP you have in mind? Or do you mean, that in the Slog mode, i should
just chance to ITC 709 (800%)?

Cheers

Don't forget that most of your options in seeing/not seeing details in a scene and whatnot come best from lighting/lighting control rather than how much dynamic range you have. I only mention that because people forget about that lol.
