Sony finally joins DSLR video

Sony taking inspiration from RED? They can make an advertisement about their product even before they have pictures of the actual cameras, not renders.

well, it's actual footage shot with the camera, I'd say it's not too far away. Sony for sure can't afford customers to be as patient as RED can.

first sample footage of Sony's upcoming mirrorless Exmor APS HD CMOS / AVCHD 1080p cameras

Hard to tell anything, reminds me of the somehow poorly executed and compressed first sample footages seen on Panasonic's site before releasing GH1 back then.

Not that bad, just

1. cameraman ain't that good
2. I think this is the SMALLER ePen like Sony alphas, not the pro DSLR models

yes, it's the mirrorless series but they have APS-C sized sensor as well. The first Sony DSLR with video may be released earlier than these.

Honestly, as bad as the cameraMAN was (not particularly the camera) if Sony's ep-1 sized pocket/mirrorless cams have 1080p and built in IS - IT IS A HOME RUN -

Let's not get greedy - if their PRO DSLR footage was like that, then sure complain, but if it is indeed that pocket camera (PnS sized) then my god, that's awesome to have that that small - the demo reel may just be appealing to general consumers taking home movies in the park if it is indeed meant to ONLY be a demo of the mini cameras

I don't know what some of the naysayers are talking about, the video actually looks really good, especially in terms of sharpness. Granted, things seem to have gone a little haywire in post effects, it obviously uses too many soft vignettes and highlight boosting. Otherwise it looks pretty cool. The real question is if it is going to have 1080p/24p initially or if it will first come out as a 1080/30p model.

You have to remember, there are some pretty interesting lenses for the Sony Alpha mount, especially since some of them are exclusive Zeiss lenses. If they released a camera comparable with the 7D then I'd be more than interested. But even that may be too tall of an order with this being Sony's first HD VDSLR out the gate.

I am convinced that even their first vDSLR's video quality will be great. They kept saying that if they implement video, they'd do it right and somehow I really believe them. The mirrorless line might only have 30fps, but the first vDSLR shouldn't be too far away.

I remember most people disregarding Panasonic's GH-1 until the first user footages appeared and showed the actual potential, guess it's the same here.

Maybe bad news for these cameras is the announcement of their new full-35mm frame low cost ex1-like camcorder at Nab. I think they'll want to hold off a few quality factors, not just ergonomics and utilities like XLR inputs - they know many people can work around ergonomics, but that you can't work around output quality.

i fidn it's really hard to tell anything from the sample video - some annoying marketing guy must have said "Make it look flashy! Come on! I thought you said you were using After Effects, so give me some effects already!" i just want to see moire, skew, skin tones and other issues with good technical vercacity. Film some pimply guy in a chair, I don't care. Give me some res charts. I'm buying a camera, not their DP.

The "affordable" digital cinema camera announced at NAB won't be available until next year, and you can bet that it will be at least as expensive as the Panasonic AG-AF100. HDSLRs will continue to have a lot of appeal for price and "stealth factor" alone, so I wouldn't call this "bad news." Also, I'm pretty sure that the products are being developed and released by separate divisions at Sony, so the camcorder should not affect the DSLRs. The Sony DSLRs should not be expected to be any more or less capable in the video department than their competitors from the other companies.

I agree. I don't think it's reasonable that Sony headquarter tells their stills department to back up considering video implementation. The mirrorless line might not have the best quality video but for their upcoming DSLRs it would be stupid not to provide video at least on par with Canon or Panasonic, just to make sure the 35mm camcorder will sell enough, it's a different price league and target group anyway.
