Sony finally joins DSLR video

Sony will unveil their A700 successor at PMA starting tomorrow.
It will be the first Sony DSLR with video mode.

sonyalpharumors states:

"You asked it and Sony answered you! On Sunday Sony is going to announce the A700 successor. The A700 successor is a camera you can’t compare with other Alpha cameras
ir
! It is the first Sony Alpha camera which records video! And not that crappy video you have seen in other cameras. I was told that the A700 successor will outperform every other Canon-Nikon camera (like the recently announced Canon 550D/T2i
ir
."

Sounds good, but I'd say the same if I was a Sony freak. Yet I read an interview some time ago with a Sony head stating that if they'll imply video to their DSLRs, they'll "do it right", so this could be interesting.

The rumoured Sony HD video DSLR and some mirrorless APS-C sensored cameras with HD video similar to m4/3 is no longer a rumour and the Sony website has some details about them. Although I believe the full announcement has yet to be made. It is not at all clear at this point whether actual products will be displayed, or if they will be displayed as concept models and the actual cameras announced later.

About time Sony entered the game!
According to that info Sony will release a competitor to the Olympus Pen / Panasonic GF1 and a mid range SLR competing with Nikon D90 / Canon 7D.

In addition to the current DSLR-A230, A330, A380, A500, A550, A850 and A900 digital SLR cameras, the following concept camera bodies and interchangeable lenses will be exhibited. Current interchange lenses, including Carl Zeiss® and G lens products will also be on display.

  • Concept model of an ultra-compact interchangeable lens digital camera system that packs the quality of a DSLR camera in an extraordinarily small body, along with interchangeable lenses
  • Mid-range concept camera for advanced users (a successor to the α700) as well as concept mainstream models

This could be very interesting as the rumours were that the new Sony A700 replacement would overcome the aliasing and moire caused by line skipping on the other DSLR video implementations. Of course it remains to be seen if this is the case. However, there is some support for the idea that this may be the case because at a photo show a while back a senior Sony official was asked why there was no video on their DSLRs, and they said that they thought the video on other DSLRs wasn't very good, and that when they did it, they would do it properly. It just makes my own choices more difficult as I have 2 stills systems, a Canon DSLR system and a 4/3 DSLR system - and I've been looking at VDSLRs as I don't yet have one.

I agree. I do not want to leave Canon for my still work.

If the Sony vDSLR solved the line skipping and actually had true HDMI output so I could record with my Nanoflash, then I would consider this as solely a video device purchase. It could be a shallow DOF interview tool in my toolkit.

Maybe a mount adapter could be had to use Canon lenses.

Could get interesting.

One thing is for sure, the market is heading in this direction, we will see who jumps first.

Apparently Sony are now currently holding a press conference at the PMA as I post this, so there should soon be more info about the details of this announcement.

Sony officially gets into the HDSLR game

Although they technically don't have a product out yet.

Eagerly awaiting HDSLR 1080i and more 24p in 60i wrapper because thats how Sony rolls right?

In all seriousness I hope they do well. I've got a soft spot for the Minolta A system and although I've left that system for Nikon, I still wish it well.

They are CONCEPT cameras, not something that even has a ship date, or even a commitment to go into production. Without a commitment to produce they seem to me to be just more smoke designed to freeze the market.

Yes the word is Concept, like all those "Concept Cars" that are so much eye candy, if that.
I'll believe in it when the first hardware ships. Oh yes, and the only mention of video that I could see was 720p. No thanks
Dave

no framerates mentioned so far, 30p is just rumors. Sony has not announced any specs of video mode yet except codec. Maybe because their still working on it to be at least on par with 7D and 550D considering controls and options at release date?! :)
Somehow I just feel their video quality will be great...

Question is, are those images of real hardware, or something out of the Red "Renders are better than hardware" attitude?
As a general question, how "adaptable" is the Sony / Minolta system? I don't like today's plastic auto-focus lenses with their minuscule throw, and would much rather use old manual long-throw lenses.
