F35/F65 Sony F65 - Any New Footage Examples?

Hi, everybody, are there any recent examples with the Sony F65? Any that use the 8K debayer option in particular? Like the F35, I've always thought the F65 had a cool vibe to it but there just doesn't seem to be too many new examples with it even though it can technically do 8K.

You could probably count the number of people in the world who used this camera (or would want to use it in this day and age) with your fingers without getting tired (recycling the fingers after 10).

Whatever is on YouTube or Vimeo is likely as good as you'll get for examples. Maybe rent a kit and see if you like it.

Lol I love that response, I knew it was rare and there were some complaints but yeah, I thought surely someone curious would have picked one up for a retro camera review or tight indie budget or something. Current asking prices for some I've seen are just too much compared to picking up a newer 8K+ camera so I just can't justify it myself but if someone out there has one and still uses it I wouldn't mind some newer examples.

That's probably a good idea for one of those YouTube channels that makes random content about video cameras.

Seeing that you joined here in '05, you've probably been around the block and seen a lot, and I think the generation that would be interested in checking one out is pretty much done.

It's just too big, too heavy (not as other systems but not modern lightweight), too complicated for most people to bother with.

Gen Z doesn't even use tripods, what are they going to do with this thing, lol.

Yes, very true! I never expected everything to just be on a gimbal these days, there's a reason we have tripods you know? I know my style would work with the F65 as I just got done with my current feature using the RED One MX so big cameras don't bother me. If I could get one as cheap as a RED Epic Dragon is going these days I'd pick one up but not for what I can grab an URSA 12K for.

I got an ARRI Alexa with your name on it...cheap.

Not 8K, but once you go ARRI's dynamic range, color and skintones, you'll forget how to spell resolution.

It's still a tremendously powerful camera, and no one would complain about the imagery.

It's a bit of a dog to offload footage from though, so most people simply don't want to deal with the headaches (especially for a camera that no one cares about anymore).

F65 body just sold for $900 last month on ebay, how is that "too much compared to picking up a newer 8K+ "

That was just the body, you need the recording unit, cables, battery plate, ideally a viewfinder, media cards, and the card reader for your computer. I do know that unlike the F35, there’s no adapting a third-party external recorder to get the full output out of it more easily, you need the Sony SR4 recorder unit to make it work. As you can see for kits of all the necessary equipment, it’s a lot when comparing to picking up a newer camera setup.

Why?

It does not record 8k.

its huge.

It is slow (native ISO)

Power consumption is high.

Most importantly, it does not look that great for its downsides to outweigh the upside.

Lucy and Cafe Society are probably the biggest F65 films and both were shot by outstanding DPs. They did not do anything for me visually that was any better than other options.

Why chase something that does not seem to have a meaningful advantage and lots of disadvantages?

The Revenant probably got the most people excited about it, but meaningful advantages vs disadvantages is exactly right...just not worth it for pretty much anyone at this point in life.

While Revenant got people excited about a camera it was not the F65.

maybe you are confusing it with the Alexa 65? Revenant was its first big film and it has done amazing work….unlike F65.

yeah, my bad, definitely thinking Alexa (that's the second time I have done that in my life because I automatically think Alexa when I see 65 even though I already commented in this thread the other day)

A low budget indie with unknown cast not especially known for its visuals. Nope.

Revenant was all Alexa. Some Alexa 65 and mostly regular LF. Not film.

Was it LF? Movie was in 2015 and that model was announced a few years later but I wouldn't know.

IMDB (which could be wrong) says XT (regular non-LF Alexa) which wouldn't shock me, especially in 2015.

It was said the 65 was used on selected sequences and it was mostly the XT/etc, even some RED, but it all looks good. :2vrolijk_08:
