F55: Sony f55 4k 120fps and up

Hellou,

The sony f55 looks a very fine camera however there is one thing missing. The ability to shoot at least 120fps or even better 240 fps in 4k. This is the one single feature I am missing the most in the current specs. I think that this would make this camera a true champ against the similarly priced red epic...It would allow the user to make a commercial in 4k, without switching to 2k for slowmo shots, meaing one timeline, one sequence settings and future proof project for at least 2-4 years. What do you think? Would this feature be possible via future firmware upgrade? We know that sony rather sells new cameras than upgrading old ones, but on the other hand their upgrade route for the sony f55 seems to be going pretty well so far. How many of you current users of the sony f55 would need this feature?

considering all the F5/F55 can do already, I think Sony will leave the full frame 4k high speed scanning for the F7/F77.

As it is there are some issues with HFR HD/2k probably due to speed or heat limits.

Me personally I think 4k 60p is good enough for most of the stuff I do, but of course others will have different requirements. I'm waiting for the F55 to incorporate a few more things feature-wise then I will be as happy as can be. Even without them, the F55 has turned out to be one hell of an amazing camera in the smallish footprint that it is.

I am afraid you are right. For the sony f55 in order to compete in feature wise with the red epic, the high frame rates in 4k are the single most missed feature, specially when seeing all the issues sony has when shooting the high frame rates in 2k resolution (sub sampling, alliasing, using softening filters).

The F65 offers 4K @ 120fps. Without that differentiation between their top and second tier cameras, what have they got to justify the F65? Pseudo-8K debayering for the F65? I don't think that's enough.

Sure, it's always nice to have more. But if you need 4K at 120fps get an F65 or an Epic. You never get to buy the second-best option and still get all of the best features (whether it be cameras, cars, electronics or anything else - that's just life).

But the question quite rightly addresses the fact that you can get an Epic (for actually less money) and get 120fps at 5k let alone 4k! You can even add the Motion mount to give you global shutter and NDs and still be at the same price as the F55.

You can always get more paper spec from an 'indy' company from sony.

The epic is huge, adding things like onboard prorss cost a packet, sony is tidier and most likely better supported

How is Epic "huge"? It's about the same overall size and weight as the F55 - in fact the actual basic body is smaller I think. While it can only do RAW internally, the RAW is easy to work with and you can vary the compression massively - you can get the same data rates as XAVC or even XDCam probably if you want them!

You think. I know - having lugged them all around. Epic is a metal lump. I think the Epic is a fantastic cinema camera but there are just too many gotchas for corporate jobs of a certain nature, that is where the 5/55 sing that they are practical for corporate/doco or suited to top end cinematography, maybe not as much suited as Epic or Alexa but eminently suited none the less..

Just re-reading my post, when I said "I think" I only meant that I hadn't actually had a tape measure out - didn't mean to give the impression that I was just guessing - I've used and owned any number of cameras, right back to Bolex, Arri and Aaton film cameras, through all the Sonys and Pansonic Varicams etc. and also specialise in Phantom highspeed cameras - so I'm well aware of what's out there. First time I used an Epic I was really pleased at how small and light it was relative to virtually everything I'd used before. I really don't understand how it can be thought of as big or heavy.
