F5: Sony F5 using Small HD monitor - Help

I'm wondering if anyone has a settings list or something they can pass on to me for setting up a Small HD DP6 monitor as a reference monitor for the F5. I want to set up the monitor so I know what i'm seeing is true color and white balance representation coming out of the camera. If you have any better ideas let me know as well. Thanks!

I dont have it all set up in front of me right now but I will say when shooting in a darkened studio environment, I have my DP6's backlight on 3 and the saturation, contrast and brightness turned down a little from the stock setting. Before I did this I found that the image in the monitor was telling me I was chroma clipping and over exposing before I really was. I use the False color a lot for its a more accurate exposure tool. After I made the picture adjustments I feel a lot more comfortable using the image to quickly gauge exposure when there is no time for a False color reading. Rare as that may be.

I'll try and remember to note my settings when on set tmrw. and share them here.

Thanks Fotojorno! I'll look forward to seeing your settings when you can get them.
The monitor is already set up via color bars but that still doesn't mean you get the correct image that the camera is putting out as you have noted. The monitor has it's own color tint that throws everything off, hence needing the setting from someone that has already gone through this on the F5 before.

The DP6 is a great little monitor, I have 2, but in no way is it a good (colour) reference monitor. I use it as an onboard, or somtimes give one to a director, but anyone who knows pictures will soon ask if it's an acurate picture, at which point I apolagise an say "no it's just a guide" . If you want to show what's really going on, you'll need to spend a bit more, or trust your viefinder.

Hey Brad what viewfinder are you using with the F5? What would be the better recommendation for a F5 viewfinder, the DVF-EL100 OLED or the DVF-L350 LCD viewfinder?

i'm not sure if anyone is talking about using standard gammas or slog2 specifically but I found when using slog2 because so much of the signal is compressed into the lower end (50% normal middle grey is down to low 30's) that exposure tools like false color work quite poorly to show you the full range of what's going on in the scene. Waveform is much better to spot a grey card under the lighting, or even the subjects skin as a reference.

As for the Sony OLED VF I found in slog2 its quite un-usable again since you're recording in the lower end of the scale, you can increase VF brightness, etc.. but really Sony needs to add a Monitoring LUT like seriously YESTERDAY.

I had pretty good luck with the ikan D7W and love the built-in tools it offers except it was cutting out several times throughout the day on a shoot and now being replaced to see if the replacement unit has the same issue. Over on the Sony F55 forums I was told it is a grounding issue that should be addressed eventually through firmware. Really not happy about that.

I have the OLED VF. I looked at both, the OLED is better, but the LCD is also an excelent VF. It's worth noting that both are far superior to the HDVFC35W which I paid over $10K for when I bought my F800.

Personally I think that the fact that you can buy a factory VF with the camera is (only) one of the things that makes this a complete pro camera system. It's a bit of a pain that all of the exposure tools are not yet enabled, however I use the zebra's and adjust the brightness when shooting slog or RAW and so far I've had no real issues.

If you're considering whether to spend the money on the better VF, or even if to buy one, I look at it this way..... Out of all the equipment I own, the VF is the one piece of gear I use the most, having a better one makes my day easier, and helps me do my job better, it was no brainer for me.... but that's just me.

The OLED viewfinder is one of the best that I have ever looked through, it puts reds evf to shame and gives the alexa evf a run for its money. I agree the the lack of a lut in slog and the lack of exposure tools is a pain but it's just a matter of time until these are implemented. I disagree that the evf is unusable in slog2. I just shot six days in a row for two commercials with it and exposed by using the zebras set at 50%. Pain in the ass, yes. Unusable, not so much.
As for the original question, I've never seen a small HD that had accurate color.

If you are shooting in a dark environment or with low-key lighting with skin tones exposed down near 30% in slog2 mode, its pretty difficult to see an image in the OLED VF. Enough to call it unusable in my opinion, I probably should have specified the lighting in my previous post.

Likely your commericals employed moderate lighting schemes, correct? In which case, no, its not that "bad" shooting slog2 through the OLED VF.

ok, I get what you are saying. I haven't shot anything that far down yet. Anyway, soon we'll have a LUT in the viewfinder, right ?

Yep, let's hope Sony puts this out in a new firmware very soon. They have not really acknowledged it from anything i've seen but will need to check the Sony forums again. Thankfully however they have acknowledged that waveform and histogram exposure tools are coming.

yay!
