Not bad, not bad. Much better looking (technically speaking) than some of the 1st F3 stuff that hit the web.

Even that "4K" is so heavily compressed it decomposes into worse than 1080p in places. Yoikes. I hope Youtube's "4K" bitrates have nothing to do with the coming bitrates used for broadcast 4K.

Sorry but it really doesn't impress me and too bad this is the "first" clip to hit the web and leave people with any first impression. This could have been shot with nearly any camera, even the F3.. but having said that without any detailed information about the shoot it is difficult to know how much the final look might have been achieved through post.

Hopefully far better clips will surface than this.

Douglas, Dennis, find the highest res computer monitor you can find, something higher than 1080p, and watch the "original" (4K) resolution version. Will also need a pretty new computer.

Not something just any camera can do, if you watch that. Doing the above on my Apple 27" (2560x1600), its pretty clear in some shots there's much higher than 1080p resolution.

I'm sure the rez is great, but the video itself isn't flattering to any camera, let alone the F's.

I'm sure the video was just meant to show the rez and slow mo but c'mon, an opening shot using 3 stops of dynamic range?

I first saw it at 720 out of the 1080p version. The Original wasn't available at the time. I now saw it at the Original res on my 8 core with the 27" and no change other than a bigger screen size.
I just think that for the first released footage if I was Sony I would have wanted a better first release. I have seen better footage out of the F3. Why would I want to move to the F55 if that is what you get?

Edit: I just saw Dennis's post. I don't think it was 3 stops I just think that it was purposely finished flat and muted. Really dead to my Miami taste.

I withhold judgment until I see it on a 4K projector. A little flat for my NY taste. But it played nicely on my MacPro with lots of FiOS bandwidth. I wouldn't base purchase decision on a 1:20 YouTube clip.

I didn't really mind it, but it's a strange choice of a footage to showcase the F55's abilities. There's basically four things we want to see in sample footage - shots highlighting movement (to show off the motion characteristics of the global shutter), shots with lots of detail and a deep depth of field (to highlight resolution), high contrast scenes to showcase dynamic range, and low-light scenes to showcase the camera's sensitivity.

Then again, perhaps there's a benefit to this footage as well - it should show you that for many scenarios you can still get equally nice images out of your rusty old F3.

Yow. Tough crowd. I myself saw in the 4K version:

-A guy who was given a camera for an afternoon, and a model.

-terrible compression artifacts, obviously of Youtube origin

-resolution clearly (again for me) past 1080p in the locked down shot of her running right to left. Consistent with the one or two of my own Red projects (out of many) that had 4K finishes.

-In the same baseball diamond shot, latitude that appears to be on par with the F3 at least (which of course Sony says it's better by a stop, but that's why we watch these videos, to see if our eyes agree with the spec sheets)

-Most importantly, no red flags (ugly, misrendered highlights is a biggie for me).

Since Sony is not parading this around as official promotional material, I'll not give them a hard time quite yet.

So, for me to see even just one shot that is at least on the level of F3 latitude with Red level resolution (I've done on or two 4K outs of Red material)...and possibly better...it's a really good first step.

I'm going to the Sony event in Culver City on Wed, hopefully I will see a lot more there.

That is what I'm saying. Only one chance for a first impression.

True, but there was an awful lot of crap floating around on Youtube in the first days of the F3. It took weeks to confirm that the camera really had the chops, so to speak.

This is not even a "first impression". It is just, as Nate points out, a quick clip. The first impression comes Wed in Culver City. Wish I could be there but the CA-based editorial and writing folks are right there. No budget to fly me from NY ;(

I'm with Doug though, Sony should have released some of its own pro footage before anyone else got a chance too.. who is this guy posting F55 footage? Is it even real?

I can feel the RU people laughing at us already.

Too bad it is YouTube quality, but with the "original" resolution available it does show of some great image rendition. The Dynamic Range being rather good, although it was a somewhat flat/neutral grade.

I think http://vzaar.com is in therms of quality the best video host at the moment

Wow... Sony yet again drops the ball before its even caught. STOP PUBLISHING THIS CRAP!!!! That is HORRIBLE footage for a first look. HIRE A REAL Fing DP!!! Get an ASC member BSC member, anyone... my god.

Bad subject, not shot well, doesn't show off anything about the dynamic range at all (shot in overcast). Whats the point of this? to show a girl crying??

They need a huge slap in the face over in Japan. STOP PUTTING OUT VIDEOS of your "professional cinema" cameras with below average DP's behind it. My god have they learned nothing at all?
Get Stargate studios to do it, able cine... anyone. Not some dude in Japan that likes girls crying....

If this is a sign of things to come, I'm glad I'm on RED's end now. I'm not going to buy an F55 if this is the first thing my potential clients are going to see. I refuse to buy a product that I then have to educate EVERYONE as to what it is and how good it is. The footage should speak for it self, and the company should put its best behind it.

Go watch an Alexa preview clip from when they first released it, simple yet beautiful. Look at RED's "RED REEL" when they released their cameras. Why doesnt sony learn?? :furious3:

Lame content and the compression is laughably bad; False alarm folks.

Because the clip was uploaded by someone who was using this camera out in the wild, not Sony, hence why it got taken down. There are people already test driving the first units, it does not mean anything they do is endorsed by Sony.
