So i know that there is an extensive thread on the F35, and i wanted to not distract from it too much and made this thread to show our ongoing experiences with the F35 and Odyssey 7Q settings.....
Here is what we did: We are a production house that has been Red Epic/Scarlet/Red One based for a couple of years. When Red announced the Motion Mount and the Global Shutter, we got excited! After purchasing them and using them, i personally fell out of love with the image and just didn't feel that i was getting anything out of these cameras that were such an investment. Not wanting to get too deep into that whole story, but i have sold my own personal Red, and purchased a very clean and low hours F35 from a LA company who had one that is pratically new.
Why Now: If it wasnt for the Odyssey 7Q, we would be singing a differnt song here. To have an OLED monitor, with low power drain, light and robust, from a company you can actually talk to and get a response out of, has been fantastic. Can't rate Convergent Designs high enough. The unit is amazing, and you're just going to have to trust me on that one until i can get video up.
What You Should Know
My Setup: I am using the following set up on the F35 in terms of power and lenses etc...
- F35 Body with PL mount
- Zeiss Superspeed PL lenses
- IF Box on the back with Switchtronix plate for V-mount
- Zacuto harware all around with Otto Nemenz cheese plates
- Odyssey 7Q powered by custom P-Tap cable
- Cartoni Focus Head
- Genus Elite MB with Schneider ND
F35: The Camera That Got Lost...
Firstly, this camera can see more than my Red, i know as i have them next to each other right now looking at the same scene. The F35 also handles low light in a nicer way, and highlights are just the best out of anything digital that i have seen. This camera can see what my eye can, in the same way. It really makes it such a solid connection between user and camera in terms of looking at your scene. Anyone who tells you that "yeah but it doesn't shoot raw" has no idea what they're talking about in terms of production workflows. If you need to shoot raw to make nice images, then you need to buy a light meter and go back to film school - in addition if you need to work in RAW, then you would never have been able to work with real film
This camera can be treated like working with film in terms of ISO rating, Dynamic Range and highlight clipping.
Out Of The Box, What Will The 7Q Do?
From the IF box the camera can record:
- 10Bit 4:4:4 24P
- 10Bit 4:2:2 60P, 50P, 29.97P
From the Monitor Out ports on the side of the camera:
- 10Bit 4:2:2 24P - i havent tested any other frame rates yet from here as we are mainly interested in the 4:4:4 output.
Dual Link
To get the 4:4:4, you will have to use the IF box and you will need to Dual Link into the 7Q. The Odyssey is pretty amazing as it will auto-detect the feed. If you change the settings on the camera via the LCD panel on the side or the assist panel, the 7Q changes its pick up instantly and you're good to go! You do need 2 HD-SDI cables going into the unit to do this, only from the IF box. Dual out from the onboard built in HD-SDI will not give you these 4:4:4 files, and it will actually confuse the 7Q if you dual link from both of the monitoring ports.
sLog
If you want the 10Bit 4:4:4 files, then be prepared to use the 7Q's amazing focus peaking features. Because you are feeding out of the IF box, you are seeing the sLog feed on the monitor, NOT a LUT version like you can through the EVF or the monitoring HD-SDI ports on the side of the camera. Be prepared to take these files into Resolve or any other professional grading suite. Built in coloring in Premiere, Magic Bullet or Colorista just doesn't cut it for us with these files.
Card Space
This is a valid note here, you will need some SSD's to get the most out of the camera. We are filling up 256GB cards very fast, like less than 30mins of footage fast. Thats considerably higher than shooting at RedCode 6:1, a common compression to use on a Red for commercial projects for us. The USB3 SSD connector is VERY FAST at downloading the cards, they are very very fast SSD's. I would suggest that you budget for 2x512GB SSD's.
Post Production - Davinci Resolve
We are round tripping from Premiere CC, to Resolve and back again. After you import the image stacks into Premiere as an image sequence, do your edit, you export as an XML - all normal so far. In Resolve, if you try to link clips to your XML in Resolve 9 or 9.1, it will not connect to them. You will need to have Resolve 10 to make this happen. Make sure you are working with Resolve 10 or 10 Lite to work with these 10Bit DPX files in the normal workflow method.
Future Codecs
It has been mentioned that there will be ProRes and other compressed formats coming for the 7Q, which will then open up the F35 to a whole host of fast workflows. There will also, i darn well hope, be a 12Bit 4:4:4 codec to come too - allowing the full potential of the camera to be realised.
Thats it for now, i will be adding video a whole load of Demos soon. I will also be showing how we are building this camera for run and gun using some Zacuto gear. Hope this was informative for some....
