Hi,has anyone tried the Sony F35 on a virtual production working with Unreal Engine?
Does it communicate well with Unreal?
Does the Genlock on the F35 sync other devices/software?

Regards,
Andrew

Take a signal out of the Odyssey 7Q? If you have a budget on a set such as that I'm sure you could figure out a way to make it work, or just rent a camera that has current features needed for such a production?

Thank you for your comment!

Yeah I think that the best way is to genlock the actual camera with Unreal. This way Unreal frames are synchronized with the camera.I just don t know if Unreal is getting along with the F35.

I can’t say I completely understand how this works but I have done quite a few shoots at a studio that uses unreal engine to create virtual set. I operate camera cranes and it was a big deal that I not show certain angles that made the image too grainy, such as shooting off into the edges too much. It seemed to me, that even though we are in a virtual world, the grain from the camera is still applied to the entire image to somehow help them blend seamlessly.

So that being said, I’m sure you know more about how it blends that I do. The studio uses the new 35mm Panasonic Varicam which is a very clean image with its dual iso mode.

So if the camera grain does play into the final image. Expect A LOT more grain from
f35 in the shadows than you are seeing from modern camera.

It also could be really cool style to apply F35 grain to the clean digital Unreal world.

The ability to lock and control F35 genlock should be easy as they were designed with dual 3d cam mode.

If you are operating in a studio and if you don’t care about size it might be worthwhile to get SRW1 so the cam can go completely silent when you hit record. Even if your main image comes out of if box 7Q.
