Sony F3

When shooting S-Log with F3 to a recorder like a gemini, what is the process in camera of setting it up correctly?

I assume in the recorder you set it up for S-Log and the format you want to shoot, but what do you need to do to the F3 in order to send the image to the recorder? I know it travels through HD-SDI but what menu elements need to be selected?

Also when shooting to the card at the same time, the camera shoots one format to the card while the recorder is encoding a different format. Correct? I assume thats the case since F3 to SxS can't record the same level of quality as it can to a recorder. So if your shooting to both at the same time and your setting different parameters to each, do you run the risk of the recorder recording the same quality as the SxS?

Anthony,

The Gemini is a little bit different than the 4:2:2 compressed recorders like the Samurai and Pix 240. I'm going to answer specifically for the Gemini.

You're going to want to attach the Gemini to the Dual Link HD-SDI ports. When you turn on SLog and your choice of 422 or 444 output these ports will be enabled. The Gemini will receive an uncompressed 1080p. If the SxS is set for 23.98p or 30p the Gemini will receive the same. If set to 422 output and 60i on SxS, the Gemini will receive 1080 60p (59.94p).

Internally the SxS only record to XDCAM-EX. The Gemini can't record XDCAM-EX.

Just to make sure something is clear. To record the way Viddovation is saying you need the paid S-Log not the free v1.4 update.

My prior response was somewhat off the cuff, and not exhaustive. The fact is, the Sony PMW-F3 offers a variety of output modes, as well as a variety of recording modes. Additionally, each model of external recorder has it's own various possible settings. An exhaustive answer would take some time to write. It may be simpler if you tell us what output you're looking for, and then we can offer answers that fit the desired workflow.

What Douglas wrote is only half-right. In the current firmware there are two ways to enable S-Log. One is as a picture profile setting, which is free, and the second is as "S-Log Mode" which is only available with the paid Slog upgrade, which is included by default on new PMW-F3 purchases. The "paid version" is the only one that enables 4:4:4 output and LUTs - the picture profile version only does 4:2:2 output. While the 4:4:4 mode requires the use of the dual link outputs, you can use either the picture profile or paid upgrade 4:2:2 over the dual link ports. 4:2:2 frames rates up to 30p can be recorded off the monitor SDI port, but this generally isn't the preferred workflow. (1080 60p requires dual link)

Confused yet? It's a lot.

Notable points:
- All live outputs are uncompressed (excluding firewire).
- Internal compression is XDCAM-EX in HQ mode, and HDV in SQ mode. For standard definition DVCAM compression is available.
- External recorders receive an uncompressed stream, and the compression is determined entirely by the settings on that device.
- Frame rates and frame size choices for internal compression do apply to the external output.
- More details available in the Operation Manual supplement.
