Sony F3 with S log recording to Samurai on Commercial Shoots

Been doing a string of web and commercial shoots with Sony F3s with s log to the Atomos Samurai - green screen - run and gun - everything and so far a resounding success. Have it on my steadicam pilot - have it mounted - using a Samsung 470 series 128gb hd - no issues whatsoever. Well one clip went bad in the past two weeks - but that's why I record to SxS at the same. A huge thumbs up to Atomos!

Does Atomos have a list of recommended solid state drives and hard drives?

There is a new list about to come out. This is the initial list:

how are you solving the full range slog signal vs limited range prores codec issue?

If you're asking what I'm thinking you're asking; it turned out that many devices capable of PLAYING ProRes were clipping the range from 109 to 106 or 104. However, the data was still there. It was the software trying to read the files that wasn't capable of the higher range. And that wasn't just for the Samurai, but everything recording ProRes. You can adjust your levels, or use different software.

We have all these new devices recording in ProRes and I keep wondering about the future of ProRes since Apple is dumping it. FCP-X isn't doing anyone any favors. If Premier and other NLE's hadn't picked up ProRes support I think we'd already be seeing some Exodus away from it.

Yep, I am not blaming atomoa but apple.
Only fcp seems to be able to pull down the values hidden, so if you are editing in premiere, vegas, ae or avid you are sacrewed

Great, thanks.

"how are you solving the full range slog signal vs limited range prores codec issue?" - for now I try to have the IRE not exceed 100 when I am shooting and pull up the shadows. Wish there was another way but for now the Samurai I think doesn't support DNXHD (but will soon) and it's right now my favorite recorder
