Sony EX3 - "Restore Media" Question

We were recording a clip when the battery died on our EX3 and after installing a new battery we get the "Restore Media" option on the card. First time experiencing this and I want to make sure it's ok to have it execute before I proceed. The card is out of the camera and I'm waiting for some feed back before we proceed. We've been shooting all day and I don't want to jeopardize any of the shots on the card.

It's a 32GB Sony Pro SxS card and the EX3 has the latest firmware.

Any experienced advice will be greatly appreciated.

Restore it, I have to do it quite often. Never lost any footage.

... besides, only the last clip – the one that was being recorded might (will) be affected. The previously captured clips should be ok.:)

Thanks for the feedback. Restore was successful with no loss of data. I have worked with P2 media for years but this was my first experience with this issue combined with the SxS format. It's always tough to push the "execute" button the first time :D.

I'm curious if anyone has experienced any serious problems with corrupt clips/cards that has made the data irretrievable? If so, are there any known situations that are critical to avoid?

Be happy that you were using an SxS card. The Restore(salvage) function is one of the best advantages of using real SxS cards instead of SDHC cards and adapters.

I have never experienced any loss of data or had any problems whatsoever with SxS cards (will be 5 years in September) or XDCAM optical discs (6 years this month). Back in the dark ages of Betacam, I couldn't go more than a few months without some kind of problem with the tape or onboard recorder. Plus, I haven't spent a dime on maintenance or repairs since putting all my tape cameras out to pasture six years ago. Have I mentioned that XDCAM is great?

If using a 32gb media, at the moment, I would only trust an SxS card as Doug mentioned. With an SDHC card, you're asking a lot in the 32gb size. Having said that, I have been successfully using SDHC cards in a Reader for many years now... after learning many cautions in their use. Even accidentally reformatted an SDHC card and still retrieved the original video with the help of a French engineer.... Something the Sony engineers couldn't do. I posted that info a couple of years back, so it's in the archives somewhere.

Currently having problem with sdhc using adapter. when I was copying in my laptop it appears that i cant copy the file and i have to place it first in the camera. after placing and restore it in the camera> I tried to copy and it was succesfull but no way i can open the file usinf xd cam ex browser. Is there a way that I can retrieve the file? Its a wedding coverage. Please help.

Hi, Your French engineer here.
We are seeing failures on all types of XDCAM media (SxS, SDHC, Disc) and all brands of camera (Sony, JVC, Canon, ...)

Hi AeroQ. I sent the footages via your site but unfortunately no feedback yet. Its about an mp4 being corrupted. I sent the files 5 days ago. May you be kind enough to send me a feedback on the repairability of the file. Thanks
