Sony EX1R

I thought it might be useful to have a separate thread on the newly announced EX1R.

I was about to buy the EX3, but now I'm reconsidering a EX1R instead. Any advice (obviously, everyone's production mission is different and affects any advice.)?

Anyone heard exactly when the camera and new memory will be available for purchase? Prices (other posts say the price will be the same as EX1, but any retailers offering yet?)

Will these improvements will be coming for the EX3 soon; as in a EX3R?

If they've fixed the IR problem on the new camera. I'd consider getting the EX1R and selling my EX3. The contamination issue makes it very difficult to shoot events under indoor lighting situations.

Why not buy the new Tiffen IR Filter? $69.oo at Abel's.

Actually there' been quite a bit of info since Sony's "Big" announcement. http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-PMWEX1R/ For example, Sony says they've improved the far red contamination problem. I too planned on ordering the EX3, but now I'll order the EX1R as soon as B&H allows it. In an email B&H said,

"Thank you for contacting the sales department at B&H Photo Video and Pro Audio.
We currently are not taking orders on the EX1R. Hopefully by November we will start pre-orders. At this point im not sure about the price. Same thing for the sxs-1 card. We update our website daily so keep checking and we should have that info for you shortly".

Currently B&H shows a price of $7,790, but from other posts I've read the street price will be close to the original EX1 price when the camera is available. As far as updating the EX3, that's a very interesting question. It seems logical that Sony would... but when? 1st quarter, maybe 2nd quarter next year? Or ???

I'm not going to wait! The EX1R availability in December is right around the corner. I've been closely following Alister Chapman's blog http://www.xdcam-user.com/?page_id=265
and video review about the "revised" EX1R and from all the details available its looks like Sony has been making considerable improvements in a camera that has only been available for two years! -Tony

I have a line on a new EX-1 for $5,800.

Would I be crazy to pick it up now with the EX-1R coming in the future?

I have a shoot in November where I need an additional cam, could rent it for about $550ish though.

I have talked to a lot of authorized Sony dealers today. No one knows anything for sure but it may be January before the 1R is available. If I knew the 1R cost was going to be $6,100 like the EX-1, I would certainly wait. It's the combination of increased cost over $5,800 and needing the camera now pushing me.
