Sony EX1r and lighting

Hey all,

I have been filming with the ex1r for about a month now and i really like it a lot... though i do have one concern or question if you will regarding lighting. It seems in certain lighting environments (in particular those shot with florescent lights) the lighting does not seem to be continuous and almost flickers around...i dont know if this is just my camera or i just dont do something right or i need to get some better lights or what but i would really appreciate any input..

thanks

Many flouresents, especially cheap office fixtures, do flicker. Depending on where you are in the world your electricity may be cycling at 50Hrz, or 60Hrz, etc. That's not just the EX1, but all cameras. Same thing will happen for the same reason when trying to tape a TV screen.

Sometimes changing shutter speed does help if you can find the one that works on your frequency of electricity.

it never seemed to happen with my DVX and i logged lots of hours on that sucker....but i will attempt to adjust the shutter speed and monitor the results, thanks for your input :)

There's also an option in the camera menu for flicker reduction. Only enable it when shooting under those conditions. Otherwise leave it off or you may run into camera issues.

From here:
http://www.mjoy.org/lightbulbs.html

"All fluorescent bulbs flicker. How fast they flicker depends on which kind of ballast they have: magnetic or electronic. (The ballast attaches to the bulb, functions as a starter, and regulates the amount of electrical current flowing to the bulb.) Older fluorescents have magnetic ballasts and flicker at about 60 cycles per second. Electronic ballasts makes the flicker a lot faster – 30,000 cycles per second -- so it’s reported to be too fast for a human to perceive at all."
