Sony EX1 w/ nanoFLASH

Hey guys,

How ya'll doin'? I am new to this forum, but had a few questions and was wondering if somebody can help me out.

Work and Equipment Info: I am shooting Sweet 16, Weddings, and local documentaries and commercials for DVD, local broadcast, and the web using the Sony EX1 with nanoFLASH. I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 12 and I own Avid Media Composer 6, but still learning it from the Lynda.com DVD. I wanna be ready with Avid when I move into Documentary work.

Anyway, my questions are about the camera set up, output, and workflow.

I shot a Sweet 16 in 1080p 25P PAL (stupid since I live in America) w/ 100 mbits from nanoFLASH. I use 90 MB/s (UDMA 7) 32 GB SanDisk cards to capture footage. It was a favor gig, so I took the liberty to test PAL out.

I rendered the footage is 30p and it looks horrible. The dances are very jittery and when I pan they look worse. After burning it on a 30p Standard DVD, peoples faces get blurry when they turn their heads. Then I rendered in 25p (to test) and it still has the same jitters the 30p render has! Even like, when the girl hugs somebody, it gets all jittery and just looks horrible after rendered out in both 30p and 25p. However, the look and overall image quality (aside from movements) is great.

Here is what I am thinking of doing for future work: Shoot interviews, slow moving and non movable objects in 24p, then shoot fast moving objects in 60i, and convert the 60i footage clip by clip to 24p. Then just render 24p the whole project in 24p.

Does that sound like a smarter/smoother workflow? And if so, can I just do the 60i to 24p conversion clip by clip through Sony Vegas? and what exactly would that workflow be?

Also, can I then convert that 24p file to 25p in case I have to convert documentaries to PAL? Can I do that off the mastered Mpeg2/MXF/DNxHD/WAV file? Or open the uncompressed timeline?

Would that still work if I continue shooting 100 mbits from the Sony EX1 w/ nanoFLASH?

I know this post is kinda all over the place, but if anybody can, help, that would be great and I would really appreciate it! :dankk2:

My advice is to shoot 30P to internal memory cards and be done with it. Simple, fool-proof, and it will look great. Why put yourself through all the extra hassle? You're making it waaaaaaaaay too complicated.

I don't think you can convert upwards in Vegas, only downwards, like 30p down to 25p, unless you want your footage to look weird. Only way I achieved something like this was in Photoshop.

Why not just convert your footage to 24p? Here is how I do it in Vegas with 25p footage. Open up a new project and set project properties to 24p, or 23.98p. Drag a 25p clip on to the time line, and left click on to the clip with the mouse. Click on properties, and you should now see something that says undersample rate. Set the undersample rate to 0.960. Your footage is now at 24p. Easy. If this doesn't look right when rendered, then your render settings must be wrong. Hope this helps.
