Sony EX1 Looked Great in "District 9"

Must log in to see file. Not a public file.

I recently watched D9 by blu-ray on my 46" LCD screen, and I thought it looked even better than it did in the theater.

That's odd. I selected "everyone" as who can view the video clip, but maybe FB is a closed system? Maybe I'll throw this up on YouTube, as that may be the case.

I watched all of the extra material on the BD last night, which was several hours' worth. The number of times the EX1 showed up in the documentary was amazing. The director mentioned "Sony EX1" at least twice during these behind the scenes explorations. Despite the purposeful overexposure of most of the footage, it looked crisp and clear and relatively noise-free. In many places, it was too hard to tell the EX1 footage apart from the RED footage, except in how they moved the camera around.

If major players are using the cam to make movies, then it's time I get cracking and make a movie. 2010 is my year to make a short film. I've got three EX cameras, so I'm compelled to write a script and plan a project.

It's not the equipment, it's the filmmaker.

If people can shoot sucessfull stuff on a PXL-2000 Fisher Price camera, it's definately not the camera.

Link to that video, please! Curiousity gets the best of me.
But indeed, it's not about the camera. Even a B&W surveillance camera from the 1970s can make a movie. If the story is compelling, the directing superb and the pacing is moving along nicely, the medium will quickly be forgotten. Heck, I remember watching Alfred Hitchkock movies on my 19" Admiral television set and being drawn into the story.

Basspig:

I know you have a high end home theater. What BD playback unit do you use?

The reason I ask is that I recently got an Oppo BDP-83 and I can see a subtle difference for the better in playback quality over my Panasonic BDP-60 on my HD BD projects. Not sure why, digital should be digital.

At some point I want to compare the Oppo to my older LG BH-200.

Anyway, just curious what you use.

PXL link later.

If you are interested in seeing BTS (behind-the-scenes b-roll) footage shot on the EX1 camera, I can recommend a few other feature film special features that I have shot exclusively on the EX1;

Drag Me To Hell

upcoming;
Valentine's Day (Feb '10)
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (Apr '10)

All of VDay BTS shot on EX1 - all interviews on F900R
Most of Alice in Wonderland BTS shot on EX1 - all interviews shot green screen F900R

Drag Me To Hell is out on DVD now, the others later in 2010.

Also, I have been shooting all of Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, & Private Practice DVD special feature BTS on the EX1 for the last 2 seasons & all of Castle BTS & Interviews this year on EX1.

I currently have the Sony BDP-S301, which is slow as molassis (takes sometimes 9 minutes to load up a commercial title) but produces a beautiful picture.

I was going to get the Oppo '83, but when a concert shoot fell through last October, I found myself in a deep financial hole with a shortfall of thousands of dollars and had to put off a number of purchases I had wanted to make.

The EX1 footage in District 9 was not BTS footage, but the BTS footage was of the EX1 shooting parts of the actual movie.

Watched that the other day and I was very impressed to see the EX1 being used to make one of my favorite movies of 2009! :D

D9 looks awesome on Blu-ray too... man oh man...

I finally had a chance to watch all the 'making of' segments on the blu-ray disk. If I understood Neil B correctly the EX1 was used to shoot all the hand held parts of the movie, which would be most of the first half.

At reduser they were touting this as a Red One movie. I think we should be touting this as an EX1 movie!

Maybe we should start a thread of movies that used the EX1 for at least part of the movie. I heard it was used in Public Enemies, with Johnny Depp, too. :thumbsup:

The funny part is that I've gotten much better quality footage out of MY EX1s than Neil got out of his. But I suppose he destroyed a lot of the PQ on purpsose to make it look non-cinematic.

He wouldn't want it to look too much like the red footage. The people at Red might get mad. :-Laugh(DBG):

I just rented it. No Blueray though. My player does a nice job of upscaling through the HDMI connection though. I'll watch it later.

So they degraded the EX1 footage to make it look like TV?
