Sony EX-3 and Final Cut 5.0

I've got a low budget project coming up and my DP wants to shoot it with his Sony EX-3, which I'm thrilled with, but I only have FCP 5.0 on my Macbook and would rather not upgrade if possible for this project since the budget is low and the final output is going to be SD.

Would it be possible to transfer the footage onto my current setup and then convert it to Apple Intermediary Codec to edit with?

With the final output going to Standard Def, would you have any other suggestions on working within my current setup?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Sony's XDCAM Transfer and Clip Browser utilities will work independently of FCP and will convert the EX1/3 clips into .mp4 files. Clip Browser will down convert to .dv or .avi standard definition but the quality is lost. Bottom line to maintain the quality of the EX clips and import them into FCP you will need FCP 6.02, Sony's minimum requirement.

Clip Browser converts into mxf format when delivering HD - and in my opinion the SD DV down conversion is really nice in clip browser.
