Sony DSR-11 and Tapes

Hello folks,

I had put this question in a thread related to tapes, but I thought I should ask this in a different thread.

I just wanted to know if I can mix both the AY-DVM63MQ tapes and the DVCAM tapes on the DSR-11 deck. Is it going to cause any problem? Cause as I read on previous threads, the DVCAM tapes are wet lube, and the DVM63MQ tapes are dry.
What tapes do you guys advise to use? I have projects of about 3 hours.

A while ago I used to work with a DSR-11, which belonged to my friend, but all the tapes I was using were sony. Both miniDV and DVCAM. And I didn't know of this wet and dry thing. So, since I am buying my own, I don't want to mess it up.

Thanks in advance

Fidel.

Thanks in advance

Re: Sony DSR-11 and Tapes

There is the risk of head clogs by mixing the two. If you are buying your own DSR you can buy MQ cassettes (large and/or small) and not worry about it. If you're doing 3 hour projects then you have to buy the large cassettes to master to.

There is no reason to buy genuine DVCAM cassettes.

I would say most users on this board use the MQ tapes as they are recommended by Panasonic for the DVX.

Re: Sony DSR-11 and Tapes

Hi PrestonH,

Thanks for the tip.

Just another question. I made a quick search and couldn't find those large MQ tapes. What is the reference? I found those 120 minutes ones, which I used before on my old Sony VX9000, but couldn't find those MQ ones. Can you send a link to those tapes?

Thanks in advance

Fidel.

Re: Sony DSR-11 and Tapes

Hi Preston,

Thanks for the pointer to the MQ ones. I will try to contact my supplier to see if they have any.

I was looking over my tapes and I found some MQ's and PQ's. I used to mix them with the SONY DV-180MEM on my old Sony VX9000.
I already sold the camera, so I don't really know if they messed up the head. :D

Anyway, thanks for the pointer again.

All the best

Fidel.
