Sony DSLRs for beginners?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the camera/film world and am looking for a good, reasonably priced ($500 - $1,000), Sony DSLR that is capable of recording high quality video and one that is user-friendly for beginners. I am looking for a camera that has 16 - 55mm lens and would be able to have an exterior audio device plugged into the camera if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sony DSLRs are not the best for video. In fact they're not even as good as sony's own NEX line: the DSLRs usually have silly user interface issues that make them problematic (like: has in-body image stabilization but that means it only uses a center crop of the sensor, and this can't be turned off; or AF can only be used if everything else is on auto too; etc.) (not sure which models have which issues, but there's not one without any of them AFAIK).

Right now my suggestions would be (in budget order): Sony NEX-5N, Nikon D5200, Nikon D7100, BMC, Canon 5D3

So if you definitely need Sony, maybe you could go for a NEX and use the nex-to-alpha electronic adapter?
If so, again, beware: European model has 25p and 50p, American model has 24p and 60p, get the one that you need

I probably shouldn't have said Sony DSLRs.. any Sony camera that is good for making movies would be nice. I picked Sony because I generally love all their products but I would be up to looking at other brands as well. I wish I could afford the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but sadly I cannot. I was looking at the Sony Alpha A3000 but it looks like a pretty cheap camera (Newegg has them listed at only $400). As of right now I think I am going to go with the Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

Then, as I said, depending on your budget: Sony NEX-5N, Nikon D5200, Nikon D7100, BMC, Canon 5D3

If you don't mind the fixed lens (and the fact that it's a point-and-shoot) the Sony DSC-RX100M2 is SWEET. Much better video than many DSLRs, and manual everything.
