Crutchfield thinks GH1's have been delayed because Sony opposes the camera's ability to store true HD files. There is no actual evidence of this; it is just supposition.
Most likely a tactic by Sony based on some legal qualms about AVCHD, which is a joint venture between Panasonic and Sony.
Maybe Panasonic broke the AVCHD license when they paired it with a large sensor stills camera. Maybe it's something technical. Maybe Sony did not want the AVCHD format getting a bad rap due to 'mud', but I doubt that. Maybe they used Sony tech in the AVCHD coded to get it to play back on the PS3, or maybe they made the GH1 raw AVCHD footage incompatible with Sony players / cameras or could it be something to do with the Vegas editing software?
The two are fierce competitors. It'd be nice to know the truth behind the GH1 delays. I wish these large companies were more open with their customers. It can't all be court case confidentiality and trade secrets surely! And whilst you're being more open Mr Panasonic, tell us when that firmware update is due
GH1 is (in Europe) available since June - some weeks ago I ordered my GH1 with a "small" dealer in Austria - he ordered GH1 with Pana Germany - and after four days I had my GH1.
They often are. For example, some of Canon's Pixma printers have the ability to print to CD with a CD tray. But not in the US. The firmware disables it and trays are not included because someone (I think Sony) has a domestic patent on CD printing. And Canon didn't want to pay them. So it's entirely possible.
