GH2 Sony CLM-V55 and GH2

So first off I will admit to being a newb when it comes to setting up a monitor to a camera. ....blues looked great....yellows were yellow....whites were white.....and red was......well burnt orange. The reds were horrible. The cams LCD screen showed the reds beautiful.....but try as I might I could not get the reds to look red on the Sony. I finally resorted to just fiddling with settings indiscriminately trying to match it but couldn't. Just checked the footage and it matches what I saw on the cams LCD.....the reds look great in the video....just can't get them to look right on the monitor.
Any suggestions????

Try your monitor on a different brand of camera and see if the reds are different.

Most likely you've discovered a limitation of the Sony monitor.

How does it compare to the footage after shooting and then putting on the comp? or a studio monitor? Reds are usually the toughest thing to monitor though. I hope it looks good cause this was the monitor I have been thinking of buying...

Other than this "red" thing how do you like the monitor?

Yeah the reds are weird in my CLM-V55, never can get them exact right...but for that price I wouldn't expect the colors to be that great anyway. Since the LCD on the GH2 stays on I usually just spot check my colors there.

Wish I could afford the DP6, but I've gotta stop buying gear!

My only complaint with the monitor is just that HDMI is the worst connector, any time I bump it I have to jiggle the wire. Pain in the ass.

Does it piss you off though that we can't monitor 720 60p or use a monitor when using the teleconverter option? I do shoot quite a bit in 60p on both this and the AF100 which doesn't have the monitoring issues...

Yeah that really sucks...I wonder if that will be changed once we have the GH2 hack?

Other than the red problem I really love it. I bought it mostly for the peaking anyways.....I have a second shooter that has trouble with focus.

The reds look perfect viewed from the actual footage shot....just like in the GH2 LCD. I'm going to hook the monitor up to my NLE later today and look at the footage and see if it still looks orange.....that should tell me if it is the monitor or the camera output.

Rob....I haven't had any issues with my connectors.....they are nice and tight. Maybe you got a bad cable????

Thats very possible, when I have it up on rails it has been less of a problem. But I had the monitor on the camera shoe for shooting my girlfriends son a couple weeks back and it just seemed like I lost picture all the time whenever I so much as touched the HDMI. It was pretty annoying considering how hard it is to run after him and keep him in focus when the equipment is working right!

OK....here's the deal. As way of background I edit with Edius and have a spark card which allows me to monitor the timeline via HDMI. I hooked the sony to the spark and from the timeline the reds are indeed not right on the sony. They show up really nice on my 23 inch monitor.....but swap the hdmi plug to the sony and crappy brown looking reds. Every other color....blues, yellows, whites look really good on the sony. Just not red.

Any way to calibrate the colors on this monitor by saving a color bar .jpg to an SD card and previewing it on the GH2?

You can put the color bars via a jpeg on your camera, but if you used any quicktime compression to make that jpeg your color bars probably won't be perfect (or so Ive been told). Easiest way is just to borrow a camera from someone that generates bars and has an HDMI out.

I tried putting color bars via jpg on a card but the camera wouldn't read it. Maybe I did something wrong....don't know. I don't have anything else to run bars from.

In addition to any particular issues you may have discovered with the monitor itself, be aware of this: the GH2's monitor output lies. It doesn't display colors accurately. It absolutely and unquestionably does not match the footage that's being recorded. And it is the footage that is accurate, not the monitor. You can take the card out of a GH2 and play it back in another camera to a monitor, and you'll find that the monitor now accurately matches the footage.

You cannot rely on what the GH2's monitor output is showing you.

I just ran bars out of my timeline to the sony. While the reds looked a "little" better they still weren't right no matter how I adjusted it. Reds definitely looked better from the timeline than the GH2 output.
I'm not so sure as I would say that the GH2 doesn't display all colors accurately....everything except the reds looked real good.

That's too bad; I was looking forward to this monitor.

I don't think its too big of a deal, for $400 nothing is going to have perfect colors. If the monitor cost a grand or more I think there would be plenty of reason to complain, but for this price point you usually get what you pay for.

The monitor cost $400, you're not going to get perfect colors on it.

Maybe, maybe not. But when the built-in monitor on my GH2 and my Sony camcorders seem to do a better job at reproducing reds than this brand new product, I think it's reasonable to ask why. It's even worse when you see it in person.

On a positive note, it's a joy to work with compared to the built-in GH2 monitor. It is sharper and clearer, and there's a "zoom" feature (I haven't opened the manual so I don't know what it's called), that is a nice workaround for the disabled thumbwheel tele when the HDMI cable is connected. It's compact and the sunshade makes a nice protective cover. I like the peaking filter (critical focus is why I bought it). I wish they included a battery though. Luckily it uses the same battery as my Sony A1U so I was able to use it right away.

As soon as I find a cable with a full size HDMI plug, I will connect it to my Sony Z5U and see what I get.
