Sony Cinema Line & FX6

How do we explain the FX9 back-recorder for Raw now?

The FX9 is still giving a true 4K image from a 6K supersample. The FX6 is just barely getting the luma detail for 4K from a 10MP sensor that gets a 5% crop in some modes. But for most of us, the Fx6 looks the way to go. Just not much room for those that like to crop and punch for reframing. Which is something I've never done, but I hear it is popular. And as Pure points out, the FX6 can never do long zoom s35.

Self-explanatory...it's bottom-of-the-barrel nonsense to charge for another piece, especially for that $11K camera.

I wasn't aware of the context. Are you talking about the FX9 owners reaction to the raw recorder add-on?

Come on now...only one context: FX9 needs an extension unit for RAW, and the FX6 doesn't. Straight to Atomos.
Oh right, I was supposed to be evolved enough to tap into the hive mind. Hold on, let me reconnect. Got it! woohhooooo haha!

lol, sorry, thank you for clarifying.

Ok, I mentioned how I'd love to see this years ago and I think it's super cool that's its finally in a camera now (maybe it already was somewhere?) - internal gyro with software stabilization. So this does not have IBIS, but it has that tech the Kickstarter company did years back to attach to a GoPro to stabilize it, where it records the gyro data that can then be interpreted in post to stabilize your footage. Awesome.

I think this looks like exactly the kind of large bodied camera I would want today. But I'm pretty heavily invested in Panasonic and prefer to stay there. I'll only be down about such things if Panasonic doesn't update their stuff for a few years. They have such good cameras, but their Achilles heal has not been updating frequently enough. The S1H needs a $3500 price point "Mark II" or "X" update sooner than later with better AF + uncropped 4k60p, and a 4k120p mode. And the EVA line badly needs an EVA2 to answer the FX6 and all of the new small mirrorless cameras. What I fear is Panasonic will stay silent on this, update with a new EVA/S1H after everyone went Sony, and then launch a very late answer to the FX6/A7SIII right before Sony is ready to launch their next models. It's like Panasonic is perpetually playing leapfrog on the wrong cycle.

Anyway, cool stuff. The FX6 + A7SIII is an absolutely killer combo for small shops and indie shooters.

P.S. I think it might have touch AF, but not tracking. (There's a difference there for anyone reading.)

I wonder if this is something that could possibly be achieved in a firmware update? The FX9's autofocus abilities were updated in a V2 firmware update, I think it was eventually given eye detection as it only had face detection at first. Unfortunate that the FX6 doesn't currently have the tracking now though.

Sure, the FX9 remains more competent in several ways that are important to some users – but does all that have anything to do with the need to purchase and carry a $2.5k accessory to record Raw?

Let's see what the Fx9 v3 firmware does next year.
Tricky situation, though, isn’t it. The only thing that would annoy me more than having to pay $2.5k to record Raw would be to make it free just after I’d done that. Ouch.

I was just writing another post...I was going to say I think the FX9 received touchscreen AF, but I'm not certain on what kind it is and how it operates (touching the screen to focus vs. touching the screen to track an object).

Nevertheless...the C70 has to have some fun too!

Yikes, totally can see that for majority of people thinking about the raw recorder. But it is nice to have the add - on for some users too. But to your point, yes, the FX9 add-on raw out box is an annoying way just to get a raw signal. Fine for those that might like the added functionality of a breakout box, but I'm with you, majority of owners likely just need the raw out, and that $2500 purchase is stupid for that.

But for some, it has some nice pro features:
- V-mount
- 4 pin XLR power
- ethernet
- internal for high end wireless audio dock.

These don't matter to the indie film maker and influencer, but could matter to a whole lot of industry pros. plus, better shoulder balance (meh, I know, I know)
