Sony is killing it:

Wow that is some added value there. Is that only for HD or for higher res also? DNX is huge for Avid folks as Pro Res is for FCP. Smart to cater to every NLE workflow. Gives operators more to offer clients without having to do conversions.

We don't know the resolutions yet, but let's hope it goes up to 4k on both the F5 and F55.

Sony does say it's a hardware upgrade, so there will likely be a cost. But for the people it matters to, its all good.

Agreed its all about fitting into your clients preferences and still being able to deliver. Especially to broadcasters who buy into large unchanging systems for years.

Yup, I have a couple clients who refuse to even try and deal with XAVC (they're just lazy) and they need footage at end of day. Now I can stop using my Samurai when working for them. I was getting a extra $100 for it's use though.. ;-)

Geez Sony, way to freakin' get it. These guys have been killing it the past few years. ProRes IN camera, major.

Given that BMD's successfully done 4K ProRes HQ, I can't imagine that there wouldn't be a 4K ProRes here.

Working with 4K PRoRes is quite joyous, strips the fear of 4K right out of people's minds once they realize that most modern machines can cut it at low quality viewer settings, and anyone already on FCPX and a Macbook can handle it just fine. Haha my GF cuts 4K ProRes now for sketches.

I hope other manufacturers follow suit.

hahahaa I'm so glad I never upgraded to Adobe CC - now I can really say FU Adobe, I will stick with CS6 forever! mooo haaa haaa

Really nice. Next I want to see Sony start doing QuickTime .mov wrappers for all of their XDCam EX cameras, similar to what JVC has done with the HM600, HM700 & HM800 series cameras.

Yup, exactly the same reason I see this as awesome news. Adobe and their rental software can
go take a flying leap. I like CS6 and it will deal with ProRes just fine....now I won't have to
immediately learn FCP X, although I will continue to learn it slowly, alongside CS6.

You guys are missing out on quite a few nice features on Adobe CC. .... I have bought every version of the suite and guess what...at the end all this software that I "own" is useless because there is no need to ever go back to an old version I have the physical media of CS 2, 3, 4, etc.... But how does that help me??...since those versions are pretty much useless Lol... I may have as well just "rented" the software or pay for a subscription since the end result and price is the same. Open up your minds a bit.... ;)

I'm sorry but it seems to me like you need to open your mind. It's not about owning physical media- it's about taking away options and forcing people into accepting one model. That's not going to happen. Historically it's always ended up in a failure. And it will this time- no doubt about it. Whoever at adobe had that "brilliant" idea has been completely blinded by their greed and ego. Like all their predecessors, they are doomed and for the same reasons-some just never learn...

Well for you, it works and is great. For me, I skip versions (went from FCP 2 to FCP 4.5
and from FCP 4.5 to FCP 7) I would spend much more paying a subscription.. I switched
over to CS6 after FCP X, but after Adobe switched to CC, I'm not staying with them beyond
CS6. It's CS6 and FCP7 for me until I learn FCP X which is what I may eventually transition too when CS6 no longer does the job.

The end result of a subscription is not the same. I can (and do) use FCP 7 to make money......
well beyond the time when it would have passed a 'break even' point by paying some stupid subscription every month. For people who 'need' to have the latest and greatest CC is fine.
I have no problem with that, just the removal of the other choice for we who dont like the rental policy. I also don't lease cars, I'd rather own a used car and have no monthly car payment.
Other people want something new constantly.
Different strokes and all that. I don't tell people that like the subscription that they should
hate it. They have different needs than me. Similarly, telling someone with different needs
than you to 'open their mind' is a bit naive. Everyone isn't the same as you. That's why
having options is usually seen as a good thing. Removing options, just sends customers
who depended on said options to the competition. See Sony is giving options...
XAVC, ProRes, DNXHD. They get it.

Ha! Thats funny.

Finally right? I think it's the 4K factor kicking in and very good affordable recorders coming to market makes these popular codecs a great added value. Smart move Sony.

Not to mention when you pay $2000 for an Adobe Production Suite that retains at the very least 50% residual value after X number of years, it can be quite cost effective should you decide to sell it. And Adobe knows this which is why they turned to subscription...

Hey Kholi. Are you talking about in-camera 4K prores HQ? My BMCC only does 2.5K in RAW -- maybe the BMPC does high resolution format in prores?

Yeah, production camera shoots 1080 or 4K ProRes HQ.

I don't think we'll ever see 2.5K ProRes, I'm not sure if you have to license each flavor but if you do then it's likely not worth it. =T

point well taken my friend. I wasn't trying to insult anyone and I apologize if I did. Just saying that some people are so hang up on the whole concept of owning vs "renting" software that they may be missing on how much more productive they could be with some of the new features offered. But you're right it's not for everyone...but I guess for company like mine where we always have the latest version "renting" or owning made no difference. Did not mean or want to derail this thread...back to Sony?.. ;)

It's all good, I can understand why for people that always wants the newest, CC is
a great deal. As for Sony, I think lots of different codecs are good. With all the
cameras and NLE's out there, and many using different video codecs, a camera
that shoots in lots of different codecs can help you deliver to a variety of clients.
Some clients want ProRes, others DNXHD, or maybe you need raw. I think it's
really cool to be able to weigh quality vs. storage space and choose which codec to
use on a certain project or choose whatever a client wants. Then, next project you
can change it up while using the same camera. Sony really seems to want to improve
these cameras to do a lot of different things.
