F5: Sony Announcements--NAB Press Conference

I think they've already said 4k about 70 times.

Did I hear right? I think they just said that you could upgrade from your F5 to F55.

Also, they confirmed that the new 3rd party codecs will be a hardware upgrade.

Yeah that is all correct, no mention of how the hardware upgrade will take place though. The new F55 ENG body was a let down, just a new base plate with some switches.

Acording to the new CineAlta Magazine the f55 upgrade "path" will most likely cost a little more than the difference in between the two camera's.

I thought you would be happy, ProRes is official, the new body is nothing more than a base plate, and you probably won't need it. I was quite disappointed, nothing new in my price bracket, and that A7s is not for me. Still at least I can go for the 700 now.

I wouldnt say its "nothing more then a base plate". It has all of the external switches and buttons a ENG camera would have but now at the tip of your fingers. Im sure it wont be cheap but I can see it very useful under certain circumstances. Here's some shots I pulled from SOny's FB page, had to lighten up the shadows a bunch as they were super dark.

It's not exactly what I expected.... I thought it might be an entire new body, made of metal, sort of ARRI like, but as usual, I expect too much.

Why have a completely separate new camera when you can have the option of seamless integration with this thing? It fits neatly inline with the current body's shape and size, and is presumably made of the same metal construction as the F5(5).

Thanks for pics Bill, I really like the idea of gain switch and white balance presets at your finger tips. This is what was great about the F3 but missing from the F5/F55 - especially for ENG, quick shooting scenarios. More "assign" buttons never hurt either.

I don't really want 4K, but from watching the Sony press conference, it's just a matter of time before it will become the standard. That AJA ticks all the right boxes for me, ProRes 4444, metal body, PL mount, probably a similar price to the FS700RH, but let's see what the images are like. Have you seen the URSA? You can change the sensor, http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicursa Looks like something from a science fiction movie, but again it's the images that are important. Who knows what will be announced tomorrow.

AJA making cameras? I totally didn't see that one coming, but to be honest a few days ago I thought to myself all Convergent Design would have to do is throw a 4k sensor on the back of their Odyssey 7Q and they'd have a decent camera. Looks like someone was already thinking this...

You never know, I expected CD to do it too. I've really fallen for the Alexa footage though, I presume it's the colour science, I really want to achieve that sort of look, rather than good looking video, that almost looks artificial as I over-grade.

Do you think this is Alexa footage? I would love to know what camera this is? The girl is nice too, LOL.

I look at this video and the ONLY thing I take away from it is that I hope my daughter doesn't grow up acting like that. She's 3 years old and just today she said I was her best friend. I wish I could freeze time. I know she will grow up and not be this innocent forever, but even so there is a huge difference between growing up and acting like the girls in this video

Of course before I had a daughter I didn't see any problem with T&A - what a difference having makes.

Sex sells, that's all it is. I was more amazed by the look of the footage, than what goes on.

Only thing you can do is teach your children right from wrong, then I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Other than that, it's all a matter of chance.

CaptJman, what do you think to the AJA CION? http://www.aja.com/en/products/cion#options

I plonked down a deposit on an F5 four days before NAB, so I winced to see so many new cameras announced - but it's all worked out okay; dynamic range remains the differentiator between what's good and what's better. I couldn't go back to an 11-12 stop camera after getting used to the F3 and having worked with the F55 and Alexa.

I just wish Sony would give us some real info on the ProRes upgrade! If I can get 12-bit 2K ProRes4444 recorded internally, I'm a perfectly happy chappy.

The way I see it a 4K bayer sensor - gives you a 2K camera (with full colour information). The F65 is a 4K camera, the Epic is a 4K camera (they both give you enough colour information for real 4K), the F5(5)/BM4K/AJA... not so much.
