Sony Announcement on October 18th (Sony FS5 Mark II or Sony a7SIII ?)

a9S could have 24 Mpix stills with all the a9 awesomeness, plus either 10-bit or 4K 60 fps. a7S III would be the same (so, either 10-bit or 4k 60 fps) but with 16-18 Mpix, smaller body, no dual card slots, etc, which at half the price would be the preferred option for everybody except people absolutely requiring the dual card slots.

What I really can't see is an a7S III with 24 Mpix, because it would have to be a very fast sensor (full readout without line skipping is mandatory for a video-centric model nowadays) and then it would be too close to the a9.

In any case, the S model(s) should have either 4k 60 fps or internal 10-bit, because I'd guess the a7 III should have clean 4k 30 fps and basically match the current a7S II in most respects, at a much lower price.

I think it’s a a7/9series camera being announced...

I wish for a FS5 style camera but with the improved auto focus of the a6500/a9 and IBIS. And 10bit both HD and 4K. Full frame would be a nice bonus.

A note on the body: I can't see Sony investing in the A9 body, with that larger battery and prominent video record button, without spreading the development and manufacturing costs over other new cameras. The video button by itself seems meant for an S model. I'd be surprised to see an A7SIII without the A9 body — at which point it's hard to see why they wouldn't call it an A9S (unless the A9 is always supposed to live alone).

At some point, I would assume they end the a7 cameras and move forward with the a9 models.

So the a9S would be the a7SIII...but I guess you never know what they have planned since they are on their 5th RX100.

I've read some recent rumors saying that this will be a photo-camera and not a video-camera. I still hope there's a room for FS5 MK II.

Don't forget the Photo Plus Expo is in NY week after NAB NY. Sony usually introduces still type cameras at Photo Plus.

Its crazy to have an a7s and an a9s line :/ i dont even see the advantage of having a higher end ‘s’ line.
Would sony do such confusing thing? Id stick with either just 7 or 9.

They could have an a7S III and a9S III with basically the same video features and quality, but the 9 including all the photography goodies, and the dual card slot. It wouldn't surprise me at all, actually.

IMO, Sony will continue crippling the video features of their high end 9-series hybrid cameras, since they want to sell more FS-5's (which will obviously have poor still qualities) but push forward with the hybrids on the sub-$1000-$2,000 niche with both the bridge and the ILC's. To that extent, one might see A7III with the GH-5 type features, while leaving A9 series firmly in the photographer corner. This does leave the A7RII and A7SII somewhere in a limbo and I wouldn't be surprised if they were discontinued, i.e., replaced by one full frame (Sony wants you to buy full frame) jack-of-all-trades hybrid for $2,300-$2,700.

If one looks at prices, the latest 1" RX-10 (IV) is $1,700, RX-10III is $1,400, then A6300/6500 in the mid-$1,000's, so it might make sense for them to have an entry level full frame 4k camera above those two.

Or, they might go for a three/four full frame camera lineup with $1,500, $3,000 and $4,500 price points, thereby keeping A7SIII and A7RIII at around $3,000. The problem here is that these cameras can't be too crippled since the competition in the market is different than what it was when these models were launched. Now, even Nikon has a couple of 4K enabled models and one has to think that Canon will soon have something with 4K under $2,000 too.

Even if they put slog on the a9 i do t think it will drive much sales from the current. Nothing enticing aboutbit for video shooters.

10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording to keep up with the GH5 would be the most exciting thing they could do at this stage.

The GH5 also does 3840x2160 at 60 fps, right? Mmmm... I'd be happy with an a7S III with all this...

I also thought about that, but if that was the case then they could have also mentioned it in the email, VENICE would be appealing enough to not need the extra mystery. I still think it's a video-centric mirrorless (a7S III or a9S).

Improvements to a7s would be higher megapixel for cropped 4k, 10bit 422, 4k60, touch screen, new sensor with dpaf... Otherwise... Meh.
