Sony A7s Review at Luminous Landscape

He says that it is a production version of the camera:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony_a7s_first_impressions.shtml

After some testing, he says that he sees the same DR as the A7r down sampled to 12 MP.

For ISO, he is calling it 2.5 stops better than the A7r. Where the A7r stops being usable for him around 6,400, he is saying that is almost equivalent to 51,000 on the A7s.

With sample images. I am on my phone, so I didn't look at the samples in detail myself:

"On the basis of these tests I would judge the A7s to have almost a three stop advantage over the A7r between ISO 6,400 (which is as high as I would use on the A7r) and ISO 51,200 where the A7s reaches its useful limit (for my type of shooting).

If you look closely you may decided that the difference is more like 2.5 stops, rather than 3 stops, but since I tested in whole stop increments..."

Best,
Michael

Also, he is saying 4Q for the Shogun??

"But 4K won't be available until Q4 of 2014 when the Atomos Shogun ships. Then the price equation will need to be considered, because at $4,500 for camera plus recorder numerous alternatives present themselves."

Isn't that when it's supposed to come out? I remember it said Q4 on the Atomos website at some point...

Most of this test is centerd on stills, so all that DR stuff is useless for me. My NEX has four stops better DR in RAW stills than in video mode (here), if slog2 can close that gap then we'll have better DR than the BlackMagic, on a FF sensor.

And yes, IIRC Atomos said Q4. Definitely not by the time the a7s is in the shelves.

The noise advantage over the 7r is pretty important for me. Many people still insist that 36mp downrezzed to 12mp is as noisy as native 12mp. Not so, we learn here.

This is just stills, so not really important to me, but I definitely don't see the 2+ stops noise advantage. ISO 25K in the a7s is a lot cleaner than ISO 25K on the a7r, but at the same time noisier ISO 12K on the a7r. Same for 12K-12K-6K. I'd say the difference is around one stop, maybe a bit less. Dxomark will give us a scientifically measured difference.

Same here. I see an advantage of a stop, or a stop and a half at most in the noise department. Weird that he sees 2.5-3 stops.

OK, thanks on the Atmos. Someone here had said September.

I thought that his DR comparison was interesting, because we were hearing numbers above 15 for this camera.

Really, really interesting that you are seeing about 1 stop or less on ISO! I still haven't been able to look on a monitor. Sounds like a confirmation bias.

With any luck he will update the video portion of the review. He does mention the multiple Picture Profiles. Perhaps he has sample footage to go through yet?

I was surprised to see this, as we had heard 6/20 for expiration of non-disclosure agreements.

M.

Don't forget that the A7r image was downsized so it adds chroma depth and hides noise. Pretty much the same as downsizing a 4k image to HD.
