Sony A7S produce much Noise in ISO 3200

I shoot with all manual, and the exposure wheel does nothing for me. No effect that I can see. As if it was not there.

yea, same here. and what settings du you have in a location with changing light? a location where the exposure varies from +2 to 0?

For run and gun (this), I will usually set aperture and ND for the brightest situation I expect to find, and vary ISO from 3200 to 12800 or even 25600 if necessary. If I get surprised by an even-brighter situation, I will bring down aperture.

So, how do you adjust exposure on the A7s if the exposure wheel doesn't work in manual? On the 7D, even in manual, I can still adjust the exposure using the wheel...

The definition of manual is that you decide how to expose by adjusting gain (ISO), shutter speed and F-stop individually or in combination. You have 3 wheels on the A7s that does exactly this in Manual mode. Just having one master exposure dial makes no sense in manual, just adjust the parameter that you want to change, most of the time for me this is aperture and/or gain.

the 7d doesnt have an exposure wheel, it has a wheel for aperture and one for shutter speed. You should learn about what exactly exposure is, then it will make sense. The exposure wheel on the a7s is like exposure compensation on the 7d. If you are in A/T modes, you can tell the camera to over- or underexpose by a certain number.

Just mistyped, I meant shutter wheel!
Of course I adjust aperture using the f-stop ring on the manual lens if needed, for a moment I thought one couldn't adjust shutter speed on A7s when in manual mode. Dunno what I was thinking... :/

I thought (and the A7s is the first camera I've owned that has an "exposure wheel" that it's basically changing the zero point on the exposure scale. That is, the camera will tell you that something that is one stop over is perfectly exposed if you set the wheel to +1.

Basically the exposure wheel on the 7 is an exposure compensation dial, most cameras have this as a menu item not a dial, that works in the automatic modes like shutter priority etc. to make the image brighter or darker overall, it only works in the auto modes. where the camera decides on the exposure. Manual mode you are completely in charge.

In the past I always used to set my Sony cams (BetaCams, HDcams etc) to under expose 1/2 stop, this was deep in the menus. This was used so that when you hit auto iris button (always on the lens handle) it did a rough setting for you that you then tuned by using zebra. We have come a long way. This is back when we only had B&W WFs, not that long ago, or was it?

It would be nice if it did that when in manual mode.

but when i go the exposure-time automatic modus, he switched from 1/30 to 1/125 etc.

my question: as far as I know the rule is fps = 2 x exposure time (25fps=1/50)

so why make sony a variation of this in the movie mode?

can i film with 1/50 when my fps are on 120?

once more: sorry for my english.

whatever you do - DO NOT FILM WITH SHUTTER LOWER THEN YOUR FPS! I have no idea why sony allows for that on the a7s. If you film @50pfs with a 1/25th shutter you will end up with 25fps because your 50fps footage will have duplicate frames when conformed to 25fps. I learned this the hard way. Shoot 120fps with minimum shutter of 1/125.

back to noise

imho denoising is a must if you're pushing 8bit slog with a contrasty LUT and have defocused bgd.
