Sony A7S II Recording 4k with Crop Sensor, no vignette?

I remember reading somewhere that if you record with the internal 4k sensor in the A7S II, that there would be a huge black circle when using a crop sensor. Is this true? I just tested the Sigma 18-35 with a metabones on my A7S II and I'm not getting any vignette. This is a good thing obviously! I am filming at Aspect Ratio 16:9 so maybe that's why? The file sizes are still large at 3800 by 2000.

Okay, I see. At 28 and above it's fine but below that it's not.

Is your camera set on aps-c auto ? If so, it will automatically crop when a crop lens is attached.

The vignette you see below 28 may be due to the metabones adapter extending the lens away from the camera sensor.

You cannot record full 4k video in crop mode, the camera will switch back to full frame when recording, then back again to aps-c if you have that set to on or auto. You can take full rez cropped pictures and you can record HD video cropped, but not full 4k

You should be able to record a UHD file with no vignette if you use Clear Image Zoom until the vignette is gone. There will be some upscaling and IQ loss, but it's a work around for APS-C lenses and 4K shooting if you're not hellbent on finishing in 4K. I tried this back in November with the 18-200 kit lens for a laugh and was surprised that the lens has a fairly large image circle through the zoom range. You can get rid of the vignette with Clear Image Zoom at around 1.3x.

This thread has a lot of tests with the 18-35 on full frame. It works as a 25-35mm without vignette on 16:9 FF, and it will even go wider if you're going to crop for 1.85:1 or 2.40:1.

Ah, forgot we are talking about a zoom lens. Makes sense now that it is possible to avoid the vignette by zooming in. Will have to give it a try with my Canon EF-S 17-55. This is one of my favorite lenses to use with my Canon 7d
