Sony is rumored to be launched a new A7s mirrorless camera this Sunday at its NAB 2014 press conference, which kicks off at 5pm EDT. The camera is believed to feature the same body and design as the current A7 and A7R cameras.
The big new feature the A7s adds, however, is 4K video capture.
The addition of 4K video to the A7 line is a significant one, assuming Sony keeps the price down. In terms of hardware, I don’t expect the A7s to be much different from the A7R and A7. Accordingly, the price should not be forced into the stratosphere. And with the Panasonic GH4 at $1700, Sony could be aggressive and stay in the range of the A7 and A7R prices.
We’ll have more from NAB this weekend at the press conference. Stay tuned for the latest.

I thought it would be 2015 before Sony put 4K in the A7.

Maybe Sony was planning on a 2105 release...until the GH4 came out.

Follow focusing with a full frame camera in 4K is gonna be a b!tch.

eta - oops, I meant 2015. Heh. i would imagine we'd be at 235K in 2105.

It is a ***** but the full frame look is worth it.

The only real drawbacks (for me) of the GH4 are as follows -

  • A Canon 50mm F1.2L on a Canon 5D looks gorgeous, one of my favourite looks of all time. The GH4 with it’s 2x crop sensor cannot quite mimic the look of this even with Speed Booster. The same goes for the Canon 24mm F1.4L on a 5D. You cannot quite get the same feel on a 1.5x Super 35mm or a 2x crop sensor

Will it cost $2K or $4K that is the question. Could the 4K AX100 be the $2K and the 4K A7s be the $4K ?

The stupid thing is that when people say 3k for 3k or whatever, I always assumed it was the first number that was the price. So I don't know about everybody else, but to me this poster makes it sound like they're saying: "It doesn't matter what you buy, we are going to charge you 4 thousand dollars for it"

I see it as:
4K (resolution) for 2K (of your money)
4K (resolution) for 4K (of your money)
and...
4K (resolution) for all (of your money)

That's not what the Sony graphic is referring to. It' means shooting 4k for a 2k finish, shooting 4k for a 4k finish, and finally it's referencing the fact that they will have 4k cameras at all price points, high, medium and low

What it actually says of course is:

"Just like HD, The 4k moniker means absolutely nothing as it will appear in products of wildly varying quality as indicated by their price point"

Well, the low light footage looks very impressive.
Although, lack of movement in any shot appeared deliberate, as to avoid rolling shutter shenanigans.
High fives to Sony for deploying this camera with a 12MP full frame sensor to maximize sensitivity.
I look forward to what Canon will announce to position itself between this and the GH4.
A camera that will most likely accomplish similar image quality as the a7s, utilizing full frame, and the ability to record 4K in camera like the GH4. price range: $2,000 - $2500

I think the lack of movement is because without motion blur it will look even sharper in their 4K TVs at NAB: this looks a lot like the typical showroom reel for TVs.
The fstopacademy samples have motion, and I don't see any special RS issues. It's not very fast motion either, though...

I'm really considering selling my FS100 to get this baby, I'd really like to get back into stills... Though the fact that I gotta buy ANOTHER Atomos recorder to get the 4k ;P..... it never ends.

Also, I'm all Canon'd out with my glass. Choices Choices...

But... Dat Latitude... O.o
