CONGRATULATION SONY!!!!!!! Congrats to us all!!! Welcome to the DSLR game Sony!!! It's about FREAKING TIME!!!!! 24P, 60P, Full Manual control....game on!
Good stuff. Can't wait to see some real world footage. I.E. Check out rolling shutter, the autofocus at work in various conditions, and of course, the dreaded moire.
The camera used in that is preprod model as shown by 000000... serial. I guess we'll have to wait for more tests to surface since this is offically out NDAs would now be 'lifted'.
There is a bit of aliasing 6min into that sample vid but it could be the vimeo compression. Mud shouldn't be an issue, the AVCHD implementation appears to be identical to that on the FS100. It doesn't appear to have recordable HDMI out. There's no headphone port or manual audio recording controls for the videographers among us but there's always the VG20 to please that crowd. One area I think where Sony might have screwed up is you can't turn off the ISO noise reduction, it has low med and high settings. I've looked at a few 3200 and 1600 ISO stills and there's quite a bit of softening (I don't know if the NR was set to low med or high) but this probably won't be a big issue at 1080p and I wouldn't be surprised if the FS100 does the same kind of noise reduction....maybe someone who knows more about the FS100 can chime in about that.
“There is much less visible rolling shutter with this camera than I’ve seen before. If this holds true with a full production camera then DSLR video makers are going to be all over this camera like a kid with a bowel of strawberry jello.” Charles Michel
The other good news is the NEX-7 has the same sensor, same video spec, and full manual control with an e-mount!
I'm pretty keen on getting one of these cameras I just don't know yet whether it will be the A77 the NEX-7 or the NEX-5N
It all seems very interesting with 24mbs 24p and 28mbs 60p video. Although I would have thought that those looking at things more from the video angle might find the NEX-7 more suitable, because it will take a much wider range of lenses. I'm mainly a stills photographer looking for a good stills camera that also shoots good video. The Sony does seem to have a lot to offer. My biggest concern though is lenses. Whilst Sony have a reasonable array of lenses, plus older Minolta lenses, the lens range is not as complete as that of Canon or Nikon, and there are a lot of gaps in it. In addition, independent lens makers, especially Sigma have not catered as widely for the Sony alpha mount, with some of their better and newer lenses only available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma fit. However, from what I understand the Sony alpha mount is not the best for adapting other lenses to. The shorter the back flange distance is, the easier it is to adapt other lenses to, and the longer it is, the more difficult it is to create an adapter, which will allow you to focus to infinity, without optical elements. I just looked it up, and the situation is not as bad as I thought with a back flange distance of 44.5mm as opposed to 44.0mm for the Canon EOS. However, this does mean that you would never be able to adapt a Canon lens to the Sony alpha mount with an adapter without optical elements, and it would be able to focus to inifinity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_mount#List_of_lens_mounts
AVCHD2 at 24 Mbps for 1080p24 should look great (and in particular with no mud), but we'll have to wait and see; the one thing I want to see solved is line skipping (I want no aliasing/moire, and the sharpness of real 1080p) - also, I don't know if it has already been posted (I started reading this thread in page 7), but this EOSHD post on which lenses can be adapted to sony alpha is interesting: http://www.eoshd.com/content/3661/do-your-lenses-adapt-to-the-sony-a77-a-mount
leitax.com make Nikon, Zeiss, and Leica to Sony A-mount adapters so there are many great lenses that can be used but yeah if you want to use Canon glass then the NEX-7 is the body for you.
The NEX-7 looks like a great option for helmet mounting, flying, and stealth work.
