Sony A6100 and A6600

They fooled us. We all thought it was going to be A6200 and A6700. The joke is on them.

The same old 24 MPX sensors, IBIS on 6600m. S-Log 2 and 3. No pricing as of this moment.

The official announcement is in a few hours.

Also a brand new 16-55 F2.8 and a long telephoto zoom.

Let's see if there's a mystery pro cam to go along with their APS-C duo.

Odd timing for a camera to be self-crippled in the video department. Of course, Canon 90D has only 30P. At least, these two have 24P as well.

16-bit converted into 14 is an interesting twist. Should work very well for stills.

At first sight they seem way too similar to each other...

a6100 > a6400 gets you slog and a better EVF
a6400 > a6600 gets you IBIS, better video AF, and a bigger battery

Thanks Sam.

I must admit, i have not been paying attention to Sony mirrorless cameras, outside of the A7sii.

How are video shooters using these types of cams?

I don't think these cameras are used by Pros very often. Hobbyists maybe? With the BMDs and the S1H announcement rollout, Sony is getting left in the dust in mirrorless.

Let me elaborate: I have an a6000 and an a6500 and they're great for stills. I use the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 on the a6000 and the 56mm f/1.4 on the a6500, the eye-detect AF is awesome for portraits. In terms of stills there's not much else I'd want from a camera nowadays. Maybe being able to increase the ISO a stop or two with the same levels of noise, or better options for using the eye-detect AF (as in the a6400), but that's about it. I'd take more Mpix if offered but just for lust, I don't really need them. The a6500 and the a6600 are just perfect *for me*.

Now, for video... the a6500 has 4k with good DR, but only up to 30fps, compressed to 8-bit 420 at 100 Mbps, and with very slow rolling shutter. And all flavors of 1080p are awfully soft. I could use it for video if I really needed to. But... The GH5s is a better option for video. The XT3 is a much better option for video. The p4k is a much, much, much better option for video.

As I said in the other thread: the p4k and p6k have raised the bar, bring out another 4k 30fps 8-bit body and we'll laugh you out of the stage.

Just watched their livestream. Not too exciting except the 2.5X increase in battery life on the Sony Alphas. Poor battery life is real limiting factor IMO on DSLR form factor cams shooting video so I hope all makers will follow suit...

I fooled myself while I was typing it.

At any rate, A6100 is $750, A6600 is $1,400, 16-55 F2.8 is $1,400 as well. Sony now has their four APS-C models only $650 apart from top to bottom.

Nah, Sony's selling everyone their sensors (maybe with the exception of Canon), so they remain firmly in control of the proceedings.

APS-C is just getting relegated toward the lower echelons of the hybrid photo-video world, much like MFT.

And as Samuel mentioned, it's really not a bad stills camera. Video is fine for the casual user too.

PS. That 16-bit-to-14-bit in-camera conversion bears watching.

Thanks for the price info. So, right now...

a6000 - $450 (still a steal)
a6100 - $750
a6300 - discontinued
a6400 - $900
a6500 - $1200
a6600 - $1400

I find it very interesting that, with a 3x range of prices, they all have the same stills image quality (presumably), and the difference is in IBIS, AF, and video.

Photographers are complaining about the lack of front dial and joystick on the a6600, so, it seems nobody is happy with this launch.

Can’t recall the last time i looked at a new camera under $500.

Pretty interesting specs being introduced. I love pet auto focus tracking.

Lets do a vote most boring announcement canon or sony. These updates are so obvious that really didn’t need a annoncemet and the naming of sonycameras is atrocius. I think the the 6600 should be named the 6500 with a bigger battery. And the 6200 should be named we peoduct segmentet just because we can so Steve who lost 100 bucks on his way to the camera store still can buy a camera. This was even more boring than the 6400. Why can’t you learn your lesson from Intel just because you are no1 sent mean you should stop innovating or canon look how well it went for them when they basked in the glory of of being no1 while sittning on ther hands waiting to be rewarded for their laziness. Panasonic was definitely a cringefest but atleast they released a great camera.
Hope we see something interesting at Ibc ä. If sony release another rehaShed camera based on the f5 sensor i will take a black marker and paint over every sony logo i can find :)

The a6600 has a headphone jack.

And the nomenclature is pretty straightforward:

a6000 --> a6100 (upgraded model)
a6300 --> a6400 (upgraded model)
a6500 --> a6600 (upgraded model)

And as far as "pros" using these cameras...I've made more money with Sony mirrorless' than anything else on the planet.

Good business doesn't worry about which cameras are used. I use cameras to make money and I would use a Fisher-Price if I could.
