Sony A5100 test.

Thanks, was waiting for that! Always like that you put small cams through their paces in real TV scenarios;)
Although you found a lot to wish for, lets agree that this looks waaaay better than if the same venue had been shot by you on freakingly expensive Beta or MII cameras 20 years ago.
 
Thank you Johnnie for that, the video looks fantastic. Can I ask, in the summary you say the camera "leaves a lot to be desired", is that mainly the ergonomic issues you highlight such as port placement, the screen needing a viewfinder to use outdoors (and perhaps also the lack of physical controls)? Because as you say, the video image is really good for this price point. May I ask whether you used X-AVCS 50mbps for the shoot?

Great video..I'm, for one, definitely looking into the option of getting this. I get the drawbacks and respect your rating, but for the amateur videographer and someone not looking to jump into a $2500 A7s, it seems like a really fantastic option. But, again, I get the problems -- no hotshoe, internal audio recording, that lame selfie stuff :) Appreciate the time for the review and would also be curious to know if you used Sony's codec. Thanks!
 
I've been using the NEX-5n and 5r for a couple years now for aerial video, and they are great cameras, except for terrible moire and aliasing. Even when turning sharpening and contrast all the way down in the portrait Creative Style, I still get artifacts on straight lines, or things like gravel, or power lines. I am curious if the A5100 has less moire and aliasing than the NEX-5 cameras. If it's still there, it's not worth the 550.00 to pick up the A5100. Has anyone deliberately liked for these artifacts?

It seems there's still some aliasing/moire, but it is clearly less than in the 5N. No idea which settings they used, though, so I'd love to see a better test.
