I'm deciding to buy a headphone and after some research found that these 2 are the standard. Does it matter whichever one I pick or is it just personal preference?

I think the Sennheiser HD280 are more common than the HD25 IMO. I have owned both the 7506 and the 280 models. As you suspect it is pretty much apples or oranges with the sound quality being pretty equal. I prefer the Sennheiser HD280 because the ear cans are a little bigger so more comfortable for me. The better fit over my ears gives better attenuation than the Sony.

I have both but find the sony's more comfortable for general purpose use, the HD280 are on my list to buy as I hear that they are very good too.

In Sweden (and I think the rest of Europe) the HD25 is much more common than either the 280 or 7506. I've used both the HD25 and the Sony, and they differ in that the HD25 sits on the ears, are more isolating than the 7506, has more low-end and a bit less highs (which many find a bit too much on the 7506). IMO, which you choose should be determined by comfort and the level of isolation you want, then sound signature (since most of the recommended phones have pretty good sound quality).

So the hd25 sits on the ear, not over them. That would make me crazy, instantly, but that's just me. So that is a real substantial difference between the two to know.

Question: would the on ear hd25 give better attenuation than the hd280 which covers the entire ear?

I've not tried the HD25 but had a set of the HD280s. didn't like them AT ALL. However.. this probably due to the fact I'm so used to the Sony 7506. (12+ years) But the Sennheisers are certainly worthy of consideration and many folks like them .. it's a subjective sound and personal comfort choice.

Same set of 7506's going on 6 years now (bought used). Haven't tried anything else, haven't needed or wanted to.

The HD 25-1 are absolutely the industry standard in European countries.

They are also a lot more efficient than the Sony (which means that you have the level control lower for the same listening level - meaning longer battery life and not driving the headphone amp. so hard).

I have had my pair since 1989 (ie: almost 25 years) and they are still going strong - just had to replace the earpads a few times as they wore out - the velour ones are more comfortable and last longer (and come in the box as an alternative to the fitted leatherette ones).

The HD 280 are not as good and are cheaper - so don't take what people say about the 280 as pertaining to the 25 as well.

Oh - and the HD 25 with the velour earpads are very comfortable and I can wear them for a very long time.

The thing that bugs me about the 7506s is that the padding starts to flake after a while -- I've had three sets and they all have done it.

From what I've come to understand, it's different for different people, depending on the shape and size of the head and ears. Those who can get a good seal with the 280 might get a little more isolation, but from what I can recall more people tend to find the 280 uncomfortably tight.

I use the HD25 and prefer them to the 7506, as I like a lot of isolation (and the 7506 can be a bit bright and cause fatigue). I find that the HD25 can get a little uncomfortable after 30 minutes or so of straight use (at least for me as I also wear glasses), but since I take them of between takes this has never happened on set, only when using them privately.

I've had my 7506's for about 5 years and they've never failed me. I got the 25's recently after talking with some sound guys and being in a bunch of situations where I needed good isolation. I have to say, the 25's isolate amazingly well. I can barely hear myself talk when I'm using them. The downside is that if you have a big head, you will get a massive headache after about 30 mins.
I love the sound of the 25's a lot, a lot more than I like the 7506's, but they amount of pain they cause is too much to put up with for me.

I've heard a bunch of good things about the beyerdynamic DT 770's. Never tried them though.

FFWIW, I like the Garfield headphone softies on on the 7506. Warm in the winter cool in the summer.

Thanks for the replies and vote guys. Whichever wins the most vote is the one I'm buying. So I know a few people recommended 280s. So I got to use both 280s and Sony 7506 and I have to say I like 7506 better, 280 are just too big for my ear.

I voted for the HD25

I use the 13-II version which is 600ohms and sounds better to me, especially with the velour pads.

While it's not suited at all for music listening, the bass heavy and the not forward on the voices sound character it has forces you to make the right decisions when recording dialogs (I'm a sound engineer first and foremost).

Had the Sony MDR-7506 too. While it may sounds good at first, I soon realized that it was not a good at all, in particular when the earpads begin to fall apart, it starts to sound horrible.

Check out the sony MDR V6 too as it is basically the same as the 7506 but without the gold plated jack, a lot cheaper too and may allow you to get both cans .

I have been using the sony V6 or 7506 since the mid 80's and whilst I also have the sennheisers they tend to be my general purpose cans for travelling.
