Sony 7506 Pro headphones

Hello everyone,

I asked on here awhile ago what everyone liked for headphones and I ended up going with the Sony MDR-7506s and got them at B & H. They sound great! One thing though...

No matter where I use them, computer, stereo, camera (and its not something you notice while louder sounds are playing) but there is very (extremely) faint static sounds coming from the left earpiece, the one the cord goes into.

Is this normal? I'm thinking its not.

It is not like its distorting the audio or anything, but when the audio is very faint or off completely you can hear it. I had my wife put the headphones on last night and at first she couldn't hear it (I told her to just listen to anything out of the ordinary) but when I told her to listen for a quiet paper crumpling sound she could hear it.

It only comes from the left headphone and its not like white noise, it sounds almost like the phones settling on your head, if that makes any sense.

Should I send these back or is this a regular low/no audio level sound (I've never owned a pair of $100 headphones before)?

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

Send 'em back.  You shouldn't be hearing any static--at least I don't hear any on my MDR-7506's.

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

I have the Sony headphones that are one step above what you have and I hear all kinds of noises. But this is not a problem with the headphones, rather the headphones are so good that you hear all the internal noise of the things you are plugging into.

I can hear my computers hard drive and I can also hear the loud hiss of the DVX100a unbalanced mini jack.

The problem is that these headphones are "too good".

I know what you mean, and often there IS a sound of headphones settling on your head... especially if some hair has snuck in between the headphone and your ears. So that's one potential problem.

However, one simple test you can do to check the headphones for problems is to find a way to reverse the L/R panning (perhaps in your NLE) of the signal you're listening to, and see if the sounds switch ears. Listen to different devices, as well. If all this results in the noise always being present in the left ear, then it's likely the headphone. If the noise switches ears, it's likely the recording device. If the noise is present in one playback device but not others... well, that's pretty clear.

Keep in mind that expensive headphones often tend to make things sound WORSE, not better. Cheap headphones are designed to boost the bass and smooth the high end for a pleasant listening experience. Audio engineer/recordist headphones seek to provide a flat frequency response, which in proximity to the ears emphasizes harshness, noise, and other ugly stuff (so that you can better minimize it).

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

I appreciate your help guys. I also emailed the audio guy at B&H and he said to send them back and that they shouldn't be making any noise whatsoever, so I think I will just do that.

It's doing it on all different sources (pc, cam, stereo) so it's definitely not the source. And I don't think its a case of crazy earhair since my wife can hear it too, he he.

However Ullanta I will try switching the channels (if I can figure out how to do that) seems like that is about all I left left to determine whether its always the left side or not.

Well, if you get the same noise on dsifferent sources and different material (e.g., not all recorded with your camera), then you can probably assume it's the phones. Send 'em back, and say hi to the B&H guys for me!

B&H SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

B&H SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me add to this post that B&H sucks.

I never used them before, tons of people have told me they have really good stuff and good support. Well it must be the weather because today their support blows!

I emailed their audio techs who quickly replied and told me to send the headphones back. They didnt give me any RMA numbers, mailing addresses, or any other instructions (no biggie) so I had to call the 800 number this morning. No big deal right? Should be pretty straightforward, well it's not.

I obviously bought these headphones cause I need them, and even though they are answering phones B&H told me they can not issue refunds, cannot send out shipments, and cannot handle exchanges today, tomorrow, the next day ... not until AFTER april 14th! because they are closed that long for passover or some ****!

give me a break! Sorry I had to release my frustrations. I said I really need headphones in the next week, thats why I bought them now, and can they ship me out another pair today and at 9:00AM EST they said they aren't shipping anything to anyone (till after the 14th). And at that point they said they would be REALLY far behind as well.

So my advice, don't use B&H during the 2 weeks of passover (or close to any other holiday including donut day and hermaphrodites week) and I will never use them again.

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

Must be nice to have a holiday like that, its not just BH, Adorama has the same wonkey holiday.

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

Which further lends to my theory that Adorama and B&H are closely related. They have the same prices on everything and their used gear is always eerily similar.

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

Well, you're right of course--B&H does suck for closing their store to observe a religious holiday.  It should be against the law--better yet we should forcibly convert them to *your* religion.  Then both your holiday schedules would coincide!  Nevermind that B&H provides exemplary service year round and posts their holiday schedule a year in advance--piffle! :-)

This is "faint" static in your headphones--right?  It can't wait?

Now excuse me while I go start my shopping for donut day and hermaphrodites week.

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

This has nothing to do with religion Barry, let's not go there  :o, and everything to do with good business.  Bottom line, you run a business you provide sevices and aim to please your customers.  Yes, I need these headphones now, that's why I bought them now and not next month.

Sorry but I've never had this issue before, I bought the headphones last week, now I have to wait 2 weeks until they return to work, I send them back and then have to wait even longer because they will be two weeks behind on there work.

Not religion.  But bad business.  When you get a product that isnt perfect out of the box it's an inconvenience to the customer to make them wait 2, 3 weeks, who knows, maybe a month, for a perfect product.  On top of that they should provide return labels and pay for shipping, which they don't.

B&H sucks!   O'doyle rules!

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

These guys are Jewish if you havent figured that out. The Adorama guys are too.. In fact 95% of all camera places in NY, Jewelers and on and on and on are.. This is somewhat frustrating. They have weird hours. They are closed on Saturday open on Sunday..
This is a prevelant thing on the East coast.. I used to live there. And everyone is proud to be a certain Religion or Race.. Whereas folks here in the midwest are just simple ol' Americans..
On that note..Yes it is a pain in the behind but it is true that B&H is a trustworthy source to do business with. They are well known for that.
That is somewhat of a rare thing in this business despite some of these companies who practice the same faith as B&H they will still screw ya.
I found EVS to give good service as well. Their prices are a little better.. Rush at EVS is who I nbow do biz with.. Hope that helps...

Re: Sony 7506 Pro headphones

Well, it can't be that bad of business. B&H is probably the most popular photo store on the planet. Would it be nice if they were open 24/7? For us, yes, but the staff are mainly Orthodox Jews and they observe religious holidays and the Jewish sabbath. Most of their customers accept this and plan accordingly.

Well, based on your statement, I have no quibble with your claim to be a simple American.

Hey! B&H is great. One of the best places by far to get great service, good prices (considering the service and reliability), and highly knowledgable sales and support staff. And, as I've said, the place is like Willy Wonka's fractory to visit.

And yes, the hours can be fustrating, but you should try 'em on Christmas Day! Seriously, they're not just not allowed to work, they're not allowed to benefit from anyone else's work either. I have no doubt that if they had a way to make you happpy during Passover they would.
