Im interested in hearing from anyone who has or used the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS or even the 35mm. Im curious about its Image stabilisation and its IQ as this lens if good would be a nice work around for use without a shoulder rig to steady shots if the IQ is good enough?

I know you 'get what you pay for' but if this lens is on par with the Samyang/Rokinons then id love to hear about it.

I do a lot of run and gun so needed a fast lens with full AE/AF/OSS. I looked at the Sony 50/35mm option and decided on the 35mm. Mostly because I've had both options in my Nikon kit bag for several years and 95% of the time I use the 35mm (on APSC bodies) because it's easier to get a close up or an 'almost' wide shot by taking a few steps forwards or backwards. With the 50mm you are pretty much stuck with close ups/head and shoulders.

When I first received the Sony 35mm f1.8 a few weeks ago I wanted to test it with the (then) new auto variable ND feature/update on my FS5. Mainly to see if I could get decent (and fast to acquire) shallow DOF shots on a bright sunny day. So with this in mind, here's the test footage I shot:

If you are not doing too much run-and-gun and your more in the cine camp, the Sony 35mm or even 50 may not be the right choice for you. Others will probably recommend.

Incidentally over the months I've considered the adaptor/speedbooster route with Canon,Tamron,et al glass, but so far none of the feedback is convincing me they perform better than dedicated Sony glass if your thing is run-and-gun and you need auto everything.

I have them both 50mm and 35mm on the FS7 and a6300. On the FS7 I used it mostly for r&g on the Ronin without the arms extension. And as a solo shooter the AF is very very helpful. On the a6300 I use them both as still photo lenses. In terms of "you get what you pay for" imo the Sony lenses are absolutely underrated. You pay less for what you get. The only downside is manual focussing which is a pain.. that's why I only use them with AF

I have both the 50/1.8 and the 35/1.8. Very handy lenses. I really like the 50mm. The 35mm not as much but it still gets some use as it's absolutely tiny and weighs almost nothing.
