Sony 28-135 FE Cine Lens owners - found a 95-77mm step-down ring for ND filters

I know not everyone is in the same boat as me, but I have a Tiffen 77mm Variable ND that I want to use with the Sony lens. Up until today, I searched high and low and couldn't find a 95-77mm step-down adaptor ring... I figured I would have to stack a 95-82 and an 82-77 to get where I needed to be.

Just saw that Cavision has the solution coming:

I believe the 77mm filter should be fine - far as I can tell, it fully covers the glass on the lens.

Also, bonus question for you folks: With that quasi matte box that comes with this lens, do you think Sony has something in mind for ND filters that can be attached to it? Looking at it, it's too bad there isn't a slot or holder that we could slide some filters into.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that is a step up ring for making a 95mm filter fit on a 77mm lens.

You'll have to have a very thin ND to be able to fit the hood on the top of it.
I just got the 95mm Bower vari-ND, the filter is about 7~8mm thick, far too much for the Sony hood.

I have the Cavision 95 to 82 step down ring and it works like a charm. I can stack 2 filters inside the Sony hood and get no vignetting at 28mm. 3 filters requires keeping the hood off and vignettes for photos but is fine for video. Hope it helps.

Good to know Luis!
How thick are your two stacked filters? I would like to see if I can use a Tiffen or Heliopan vari-ND.

I wouldn't worry about thickness, but I used to have a tiffen vari-nd and the front ring was quite large. I'm not sure if that would fit inside the sony hood. In any case, I wasn't very happy with it. It would tint highlights amber at a certain angle and you'd have to twist the whole thing to get rid of them, leaving the filter loose. I just ordered a kenko ndx hoping it'll make that go away with the depolarizing plate it has. I'll keep you posted. :-)

Just a quick follow-up.

I received the Kenko NDX. It's worth every penny over the Tiffen. It fits inside the Sony hood. Even with another ND filter stacked and it doesn't vignette. That way you can add another ND to better control in very bright situations without pushing the NDX too far and not having to worry about the X pattern or IR pollution.

Hope it helps. Cheers.

Edit: I asked about what step-down you were using, and I see you posted that you have the Cavision 95-82mm.

Can you tell me how you stack filters? As in, I would get a Kenko NDx and then what exactly would I get to stack on it? Another of the same variable NDx or an IR filter or ???

Depends on what you want to achieve. I stack it on top of another ND when I want to lose some serious amount of light, such as when you want to shoot f1.4 in broad daylight. Or you could stack a grad nd, ir blocking, color balancing, black promist, etc... Or you can also just use the NDX by itself. I was just pointing out the fact that you can stack another and still get no vignette at 28mm. ;-)
