Sony 18-270 Zoom for the F3

Pretty much echo's my thoughts Peter,
I just hope Sony retain this mount for whatever replaces the F3, so the lens stays useful...
(F5/7/9 or whatever!)

I just pick up the 18-270 as part of a used F3 package purchase. Seems like a really solid lens, but doesn't seem to fit what I do (mostly interview/broll in controlled situations.) I bought the package from a wildlife cinematographer (Nat Geo, Discovery) who loved the lens--sharpness, zoom range, image stabilization, ... He moved on to Red so he could have 4K stock footage. I'll be looking at the lens over the next few days, but I will probably be selling it. Anyone thinking of buying one, and want to get one at a discount let me know. It is in like new condition. Thanks, Joseph

I'd be interested in the lens Joseph if you were to looking to move it on...

Any samples online I can see of actual zooms in action? I wonder how smooth they can be to actually record... would love to see some clips.

Star,

It does extend some, I might be able to shoot a video of that for you next week. It stays within it's own hood, but it's not good for using a mattebox.

It does have threads for screw on filters though.

Do you know if there are any nikon zooms that don't extend?

It's mostly the cheap consumer lenses that don't have a constant max. aperture and that extend. If you stick to the higher-end lens you won't have to worry about it.
I have an 17-35 f/2.8, 80-200 f/2.8, and a Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 and none of them extend.

i used this lens last week. the only other lens i had on hand was the Red Pro 17-50, which is a great lens. but being in a situation where i really needed the convenience of just one lens most of the time, the Sony was really great to work with. operation was straight-forward, once i was informed about having to change the "Lens IF" setting to make it work. the zoom wheel was not very stiff, but had enough resistance that you could roll it smoothly. the zoom range is pretty tough to beat. the shoot was pretty down and dirty, so i can't really say i was carefully comparing IQ, but for versatility and usability it was very good. heavier/bulkier than a dslr lens, but not bad compared to any other PL zoom i've used.
