FS5: Sony 16-70 manual focus

Anyone using the 16-70 and focusing manually? How does it compare to the 18-105? Thinking about picking one up for my fs5...Thanks

I had it with the a6300 and used it on the FS7 for run&gun before the 18-110 (not 18-105) came out. Image quality is far better than the 18-105 with the horrible distortion. Manual focussing with focus by wire has the well-known handicaps but if it works for you with the 18-105 it will work with the 16-70 too. Hope that helps

Thanks, Clermond. The 18-105 was nearly impossible for me to MF -- that's why I got rid of it. I'll have to try out the 16-70 at BH when it reopens...

FWIW, the 16-55mm is a better lens in almost every way (you'll lose a bit on the longer end), and only a bit more money than the aging Sony Zeiss.

Personal tip: Always look for focus switches on lenses to get an idea of how focusing may be. Not always a 100% telltale, but lenses with switches usually are so much better with manual focusing.

Thanks, Norbro. But no IS on the 16-55 and I'll be using it on the FS5...

True, true...have you used OSS before?

I used probably all of Sony's OSS lenses at some point or another within the last 10 years and it never worked well for video besides on the wider end. (Haven't used the "cine" ones.)

But with that said, 16mm IS should be nice.

My only experience is with the Sony 18-105 and my issue wasn't with the OSS but manual focus. I tried shooting handheld with my Tamron 28-75 (non stabilized) on the FS5 and the results weren't terrible but not too great...
