Sony 10 year old Cam/ Mini DV into Final cut X HELP

I have an old Sony HDV cam(about 10 years old) that shot onto mini dv tapes. What is the best way to upload all of my old tapes into Final Cut X for saving and editing. There are about 30 old tapes. The camera does work and it plays in import but they are not files because of mini dv tapes. Any good suggestions? Saving all would eat a lot of hard drive space......
Thanks!

I am not very shure, but I think HDV was an interlace format with diferent ways, by brands, to appear like progresive. If I remember correctly, FCPX read tapes as they were progresive, so you will lose resolution. About the space, an external hdd will work, keeping proxies in the mac.
Anybody know better about this?

I've captured some old HDV tapes in FCPX. Its pretty simple from what i remember. Just hook it up firewire then go to the import window and pick the camera. I cant remember if it was best to rewind the tape manually first. Then it will just go through the whole tape and pull in QT. I think it keeps it in the standard HDV format like you would have done in the older FCP.

You may want to transcode them through Compressor as ProRes422 or LT to save some storage space later. Or h.264 set to high if that's good enough for what you need.
