Sony’s answer to the AF100?

Super35mm CMOS sensor – it was implied that it was the same physical sensor as the F3.
Sony E-Mount lens mount
Shipping “Mid 2011″
Probable formal launch at NAB 2011.
Price indication (locally) NZ$7,500 (excluding tax) which would make it slightly cheaper than the Panasonic AF100.

"The most noticable features in the new images (which we were told is a production design) are a big EX3-like viewfinder mounted on the top"

the most reason for me not AF100 is the VF's position

Interesting. I wish there was a little more info (like if there is HD-SDI, codec and output options, frame rates, etc.)

I think I'll still get the AF100 in the new year, and if this camera ends up doing certain things much better, then I could always hold onto my lenses and sell the AF100 in the fall.

Either way, these days are great times to be in the market for a new camera.

The great part about these cameras is that the only investment is the camera itself. Lenses, monitors, FFs, Matteboxes and all other accessories can move from camera to camera. At the end of the day, the camera is a fraction of what the rest of your package comes to. I like that I can throw down on a nice set of prime lenses and not be worried if a better camera comes out.

If this is the competitor to the AF100 you can bet Panasonic is more than likely hard at work on a competitor to the F3. I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.

I have become so partial to Panasonic that the Sony would have to be leaps and bounds better cause otherwise they produce extremely unfriendly camcorders in my eyes.. just their ergonomics and fucntionality leave a lot to be desired and who can keep up with all the models that they ship anyway.. Seems like one after another they pop out.... and then they are gone... One things for sure though, the LCD on the EX3 is stunning... As for it being a nice handheld camera.. well that's a completely other story.

There is also a lot of room below the AF100 (kind of a VG10 competitor). What about a AF100 minus:

- XLR
- SDI

For all those people that use external recorders and want to stay with the onboard Codec.

Great. And nice to have some competition in the same field. And if it would be really so much better then there may be a used AG-AF 101 on the market in autumn 2011... Have my doubts though that such news would hold anyone back who really is shooting now.

But, just for me and you: Having been a Sony-addict for years I decided to skip the brand altogether after I found out what they wanted for the mains adapter for my then Vaio-notebook and how much technology they had put in such mains adapters and the computer itself to make sure that you had to buy this brick-sized monster for an absurd price .... and could not use a third party one had you lost your original... and this I found out in the process of finishing a script on a Mediterranean island..... not.... yep, revenge of the little man.... ;-)

May as well get a GH2 at that point. I doubt Panasonic will make a camera like the AF100 without those features.

Panny would have a tm700 version. Except 24p over 60i pfffft!

If this is cheaper than the af100 id be surprised. Id buy one if business goes well here

will it do variable framerates at 1080p? if not....not even looking at it. if yes it might be interesting, but the E-mount is SONY only while the 4/3 ids not only more flexible but has Olympus on board who make good lenses exactly for that mont.

F3 30fps+ at 720 only.. yeah bit of a drawback the nxcam is stil unclear what it will do.

The design of the new nxcam is interesting.. the viewfinder is on top, the handle doubles as the mic holder and it looks like its already set up for multiple lense configs so no need for all this crazy custom work. Lets see.

Sony's said this thing is a good six or seven months away. And one thing that I can guarantee you -- it will have its share of drawbacks. When a manufacturer designs a product to meet a certain price point, there are compromises made. If the NXCAM is better across the board than the AF100, then it will cost more. If it's comparable in price, then it will be comparable in functionality. Typically Sony makes different choices than Panasonic, and the Panasonic typically costs substantially less (HMC150 is 45% of the cost of the EX1R, for a slightly-smaller-sensor version of a long-GoP 8-bit 4:2:0 fixed-lens handheld memory-card camcorder). So Sony is making a slightly-larger sensor long-GoP 8-bit 4:2:0 interchangeable-lens camcorder (the NXCAM), as compared to the AF100 -- sounds like a similar situation, and therefore I would expect the NXCAM to either cost substantially more, or to not have as many additional features. We'll see once they start announcing actual specifications, but I can guarantee you won't get something for nothing -- especially from Sony. It will be better in some ways, it will be lesser in some ways, and on a cost-per-features basis it will be probably comparable. So then it comes down to "what features does one have, that the other doesn't, that you're willing to pay for".

there was a question mark as to wether or not it has SDI out, however the photo we saw had a BNC connector.. so definitely lots of speculation about very little information
