Something rather troubling...

I went into a camera rental agency the other day to take a look at this new JVC HDV cam and upon receiving a demonstration, I was very distressed about something. The frame rate... OK. I'm a little dilettante amateur maybe, but this camera to me has a horrid very videolike motion whenever you pan or do a tracking shot. For static shots it's OK but when one zooms or pans, it takes on a very silly and unfilmlike home video quality. Has anyone noticed this? What are your thoughts?

Live component out in HDV-24P mode is NOT 24P, but what gets recorded to tape is.

Record a bit in 24P mode and playback...if you still think it doesn't look right then you're probably looking too hard.

The 24P modes on this camera, for the purpose of this discussion, work exactly like the DVX100, SDX 900, Varicam, and Cine-Alta.

The camera's 24p mode outputs 48p over analog with pulldown into 60p (pull-down is 1:1:1:2), so that can look a little odd as it doesn't look like standard 3:2 pulldown (perfectly good data though.) However this is a good thing for those capturing the analog feed, as we have been experiment with (see notes on this here: http://cineform.blogspot.com/2005/10/jvc-hd100u-frame-rates.html.) The camera in 30p puts out a very smooth 60p on the analog connectors.

David,

That is a really nice report on your link. Can you elaborate either here or on another thread about the capture device I've been hearing about? Does Cineform have a external capture device ready for the HD100?

The press release on the new recorder is pending. But yes we are about to place beta units for use on active film projects (and we are looking of a couple more funded projects for beta testing.) On one signed up project, the Wafian recorder will be used with the HD100 at 60p and 24p, other projects are looking at the recording CineAlta output. It is a flexible unit.
