Somebody help please! cannot capture!

Obviously it's not the firewire card/port. It's the external drive, for whatever reason. Did you buy an external enclosure and then install a drive into it? Or is it a plug-n-play unit? If it is the latter, then consult the mfr's website. If it is the former, perhaps you can try a different enclosure; or install the hard drive directly inside your case (tower).

Or do a system restore to the point a couple weeks before you experienced the problem.

Keep trying--your patience will eventually pay off.

Its a maxtor HD in a maxtor enclosure a friend gave me. I figured it was a windows problem that it wouldn't access the drive. The drive seems functional, i can open it and pull data out of it just fine, its writing to it that becomes an issue. Perhaps i'll go to compusa and buy a new enclosure tomorrow, i had planned on getting another external anyways... though if problems like this persist maybe i should look at a raid setup instead.

The Prolific chipset firewire drives has this problem (i.e. in USB2/firewire combo drives by Bytecc and a bunch of other manufacturers). That's another potential cause.

I still dont know the problem. For me, it only happens in Vegas. All other capture programs work fine. There are just so many things I have to check. I am burning onto my hard drive, because it still has 100-some gigs. This probably has nothing to do with it, because it used to work just fine.

The bad capturing started about a week after, when I tried to use a video preview device, big black squares danced around my screen.

J5Squared, can you try something for me? Hook up your camera to the computer (while it is off) ( dont hook it up to the external drive, plug it into the motherboard), turn the camera on, and when the auto-start window comes up, select "Capture Digital Video using Vegas 6.0". When you've done so, click on the external preview window button in the Preview box. Make sure it is selected to the OHCI-Compliant device (found under Options>Preferences>Video Preview tab) When youve done this, bring a functioning video clip to the timeline, and play it. The video SHOULD play on your camera, when it is on playback mode (if not, take out the tape) Now, pause it, stop it, add effects and tinker with it. Are there big black square swaying around your screen as you mess with the video? If so, then we are on the same page.

nope mine still displays just fine, and mine isn't a problem with just vegas. I can't write to the drive at all. If i just go to my computer and drag a file onto the drive i get the error, if i try to capture in windows movie maker i get the error. I still think its a windows error. I suppose it could be a problem with the enclosure but i don't really see how. There really isn't any software or hardware with the enclousure, all it really is is an ide to firewire adapter and a powersupply. I see it as being a windows problem controlling a firewire drive.

So after reading countless articles of people experiencing delayed write failures i've found that there can be any number of causes. But a problem i did see reoccuring alot was neither the fault of the drive or the computer system, but that of the enclosure. It appears that on many enclousures, especially the cheaper kinds as i had, the ide-IEEE adapter in the enclosure can go bad and give the delayed write error when attempting to save to the drive. But it can still work well enough to be able to read off the drive. I went to comp usa and purchased a new enclosure, and wala my problems are solved. Now in my situation i had had delayed write errors now and then until a point and then i recieved the error whenever i tried to save any information to the drive. If you are having problems similar to mine i suggest you buy a new enclosure and see if it solves your problem. I'd save your receipt though just in case, good luck!

Sweet! Glad your problem was fixed so easily and inexpensively. So what brand of enclosure did you get, and how much did it cost? (May have to get me one of those.)

well comp usa didn't have any wonderful enclosures so i just bought a semi cheap one to test out. I got a usb 2.0 compusa brand one for $20. its a aluminum case so it will heat transfer better than the plastic one i had. But i'm gonna take my good 300gb drive out and put a 40gb one in that i'll use to take to clients and show work. I'm buying two of these venus enclosures for my 300gb drives, i'll use them firewire and they are supposed to be one of the best enclosures available.
