I have no idea whats happened here, the other day i could capture fine. Then last night i try and capture using my little pos gs12 i always capture from and as soon as i clicked capture in vegas it would act like it was capturing for about a second and the pop up the capture finished box and say "no files captured". I have full dv control over my cam using the program and if i just click play and let it play it plays fine, but as soon as i hit capture it will start and then stop right away. I thought it was maybe my cam being dumb so i plugged in my dvx and same thing. So i thought maybe it was the tape and tried a different tape and same thing. So i thought maybe something got screwed up in my vegas preferences so i defaulted everything same thing. So i went into windows movie maker and tried to capture from there SAME THING! So now i'm thinking maybe something with my firewire cable or plug is messed up. So i tried a new cable, no difference, so i plugged it into my aftermakret firewire card instead of my motherboard, same thing. So now i'm on my last idea, i go into my device manager and try and roll back my firewire drivers maybe they got changed, no drivers to roll back to they have never been changed. I am at a loss, someone please help, i have got to be able to capture!

I'm now noticing that my external drive is giving me "delayed write error" messages everytime i try to save to it right now. Something seems to be messed up with my firewire. I have windows serivce pack 2 installed. can anyone give me any help, i'm totally lost as where to go from here.

Can you capture to a drive other than your external?

Do a Google search for "Delayed Write Error." I ran into the same situation awhile back, with no real resolution. Comes and goes it seems. You can disable disk write caching for that particular drive. If you're using USB 2.0 for that ext. drive, does that external have a firewire option? Unless your drive is failing, the problem would seem to stem from the VIA chipset. Also make sure Windows is fully patched.

Since your last successful capture, has anything on your system changed? New software, hardware, other devices? Maybe you unplugged the drive and plugged it into a different port the next time? I tried a different USB port and didn't get the error nearly as often.

Well i unplugged my firewire external and tried to capture to another drive and it seemed to work. So my issue must be with that drive and that it was simply not letting it access it to save the clips, therefore it wouldn't save anything. I have had the "delayed write error" randomly in the past as well. Seems that if i unplug my drive and plug it back in then it will start working again normally. Perhaps i'll try plugging the drive into my motherboard firewire port instead of my aftermarket card. I've searched all over for fixes for this error and have found tons of results but nothing concrete that seems to fix it. Let me know if you ever find any fixes... this is rather annoying and can be a big problem when its at an inconvienent time.

Errrrr now i plugged my external drive back in and i'm still gettin no capture! Same as before, and my external drive is the only drive i have space left on so this is a semi big deal for me now.... nothing has changed from the last time i succesfully captured to it, i don't understand!

If nothing else works, go pick up a new firewire pci card. if that doesn't fix it you can always return the card. avoid getting it from wal-mart.

I can't imagine its the firewire card causing the problem. I'm currently using the firewire port on the motherboard, i'd think if it was the card then on the motherboard i'd have no issues... but i still have issues. After reading those posts i find it interesting that i didn't start noticing these problems till i updated my ati 9800aiw graphics card. I will never buy ati again. Where are the settings to choose your performance level of the drive? I haven't been able to find them and didn't see them mentioned in any of those posts.

do a driver rollback on that ati card. there have been reports of new ati drivers causing problems like ours...

i tried, i'm back to the original drivers that came on the cd, no change. You know i used to get this delayed write failed occasionally but now i get it everytime, its become impossible to write to this drive. I'm starting to consider a total reinstall of windows....

I've had almost the exact same symptoms. PM me if you figure something out. I probably just going to buy a new PCI FireWire card.

let me know if buying a new card helps you. I just don't see how it would. Techincally i have two firewire cards, the port on my motherboard and then the seperate firewire pci card. I've tried both with the same results so i don't see how a new card would do anything but waste my money.

Obviously it's not the firewire card/port. It's the external drive, for whatever reason. Did you buy an external enclosure and then install a drive into it? Or is it a plug-n-play unit? If it is the latter, then consult the mfr's website. If it is the former, perhaps you can try a different enclosure; or install the hard drive directly inside your case (tower).

Or do a system restore to the point a couple weeks before you experienced the problem.

Keep trying--your patience will eventually pay off.

Oh, and just in case, start backing up your data on your system drive and gather all necessary software/drivers in the event you need to re-install Windows.
