Some wildlife footage.

Shot this today all with the DVX200. All of it was shot 1080P 100M 59.97 Default Scene File #1. Most of the sheep scenes also use iZoom maxed out. I did minor color correction, no other adjustments.

Just curious, do you see lime green highlights in the opener and water shots?

I see it in the highlights only, where the exposure was a bit blown out. Large dynamic range in those shots. I noticed they were over exposed when I was shooting and opted to leave them to keep the shadows. Good eye!

Silver lining of the green tinge in blown-out sections.....I got to practice my secondary color correction skills. The 3-way Color Corrector in Premiere (CS6 in this case) did a reasonable job.

I get it, some times we have to make adjustments, for a cameras limitations. It sure would be nice to have 10bit-4:2:2 for more latitude that might help in getting a proper color balance. I know we can get a DR, but that's extra cost and not as manageable as having it built in your camera. I'm still debating if I should keep this camera, I may add a GH5, I'm going to wait and see how that camera shakes out. Nice work, I like the Water and Ice shots.

What's a 'DR'?

DVX200 with V-log L plus external recorder at 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes HQ? Amazing. Grades very well.

I recently purchased an Atomos Ninja Blade + 64GB Cfast2 card on sale for under $170 at B&H. Full HD 10-bit 4:2:2...really shows what the camera is capable of. I have no need for an external monitor that also records 4K, but when I do I will get a PIX-E-something.

I will happily use a naked DVX200 with an external recorder over any stills camera that would need to be rigged out to have the same ergonomics and usability as a proper video camera. On that note: FZ2500 is still a better alternative to DVX200 or contender for DVX200 B-cam because of its unibody design, similar focal length and built-in ND wheel. GH5 might be great on projects where you don't mind changing lenses and filters and having to rig a stills camera to be usable as a proper video camera. At the end of the day, I'd love to own a Varicam LT...

But if I were going to get rid of my DVX200 and live with just one serious 4K camera, I'd get a Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K. I'd rather have one anyway to replace my BMCC as my cinema camera. I'd still use DVX200 for the majority of my work: corporate and private videos. Movies, commercials and music videos would be the Ursa Mini Pro and my set of PL lenses....but now we're supposin'. I like my DVX200 very much...I love it with an external recorder...and I love that I can control the price of that by choosing what kind of accessories I purchase for it.

7DDude, here's an image I shot yesterday for a short film. Completely internal DCI 4K 24p 100 V-log-L. It's properly exposed. No blown highlights, just white puffy clouds and a patriotic display of color. You can see how well the DVX200 works with highlights. Larry Chapman was exposing for the shadows in a video setting on a very bright day with the sun right above him. Any weirdness with the highlight falloff is due more to his choices as an operator on the day, rather than the limitations or processes of the camera.

Agreed.

That said.....I wish it had simply blown out and not turned green.

Yeah...I wonder what's going on. I imagine it's a scene file 1 thing...that's the one that's supposed to look the most video-ish, but highlights clipping and becoming green? Maybe after work I'll see if I can duplicate it on my camera. I doubt your lite grade did that...unless it did. Is it on the raw? If it's not maybe it is part of what's making that sky so nefariously deep blue?

The green is in the un-graded footage. That is what the sky looked like! :-)

Jason, DR is Digital Recorder, I should have used External Recorder, sorry. So you like the Atmos Ninja Blade, No issues to speak of with the DVX200?

I figured. Digital Recorder, to me, is one of those boxes you add to an old tape camcorder to give it more life. lol Probably the same thing, actually.

I only wish that it responded to a record trigger. But, shooting 10-bit you can only record externally so it's still only one record button to press...albeit on the Atomos. However, this solution works for me because I have an external field monitor, a SmallHD AC7-SDI, plus I don't require 10-bit 4:2:2 4K right now. If you do not have a monitor, or you do need badass 4K, then it'd be better to just get a field monitor/external recorder like the Blackmagic Video Assist 7", Atomos something something, Pix-E-5 or 7...lots of options out there, Blackmagic's being the cheapest, I bet. But for my purposes of Full HD ProRes HQ 4:2:2 10-bit and the fact that I have an external monitor to make sure I'm actually recording something (and desqueeze anamorphic) in the field, the Ninja Blade works just fine...and it was cheap. If they could make a 4K version, that'd be super hot. Next thing for me would be to get an external field monitor/recorder that can do 4K and import LUTs...to which there are already choices.

CORRECTION:

I meant the Atomos Ninja Star.

Ninja Blade has a 4" monitor.

I have the Ninja STAR. This one atop my DVX200, see it connected to my SmallHD AC7 monitor:

LOL, I thought the green could have been an algae. It was minor and did not distract from the nice footage you took.

By the way, I love Colorado. Currently I live in South Florida, but have vacation homes in the mountains of North Carolina and Montana. I also gave some thought to a possible part time residence in the Swiss Alps, but something tells me Colorado might be in the picture. North Carolina is very close to me and I can drive there in a day. So as long as I maintain my Florida home, I will also keep the NC home. Montana is nice, but very isolated and cold. If I sell that, I may buy something in Colorado. Yep, you are living in a really great place!
